Two of the top pitching prospects in the Braves system got the ball on Sunday, but did so without their best command. Sunday was set to be an interesting day with Hurston Waldrep and Jhancarlos Lara on the bump down on the farm for the Atlanta Braves. While things didn't go as planned for either, we did get some high scoring games and a few of the hitters had notable afternoons, including Luke Waddell and Colby Jones each reaching base four times on the day.
Gwinnett Stripers 12, Norfolk Tides 8
Box Score
Statcast
Alex Verdugo, LF: 1-2, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB .182/.250/.500
Luke Waddell, SS: 3-4, 2 R, RBI, BB, SB, .340/.433/.420
Hurston Waldrep, SP: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 5 K, 7.11 ERA
Buck Farmer, RP: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 7.71 ERA
Hurston Waldrep faced a loaded Norfolk lineup and they made him pay for some mistakes. Waldrep lasted one out shy of four innings and allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out five batters. While Waldrep’s ball to strike wasn't awful (51 of 83 pitches were strikes), the Tides hitters were patient and waited for mistakes. He was followed by scoreless appearances from Jackson Stephens and Dylan Dodd, with Stephens getting four outs and Dodd going one inning. Buck Farmer was next, and although he allowed three base runners and one run, he picked up an impressive seven swings and misses in one inning as he struck out the side. Jesse Chavez came in for a scoreless frame, before giving way to Jordan Weems, who allowed a pair of solo homers to make this game look closer than it was.
Alex Verdugo was the star at the plate even if he left the game early, for non-injury reasons. Verdugo was one for two with a walk, with the hit going for a three-run homer, and also drew a walk. Luke Waddell went three for four with a walk and scored a pair of runs, while also picking up an RBI and was joined by Cody Milligan, who was three for five with a triple, in having a three-hit game. Jose Devers and Charles Leblanc also added multi-hit games in the win. Overall everyone except catcher Sandy Leon had a hit, including Conner Capel, who replaced Verdugo in the fourth inning.

Biloxi Shuckers 9, Columbus Clingstones 8
Box Score
Kevin Kilpatrick Jr., CF: 3-5, R, .292/.370/.292
David McCabe, 3B: 1-3, 2B, 2 R, 2 BB, .409/.576/.727
Cade Bunnell, RF: 2-4, 2B, BB, 3 RBI, .308/.500/.385
Jhancarlos Lara, SP: 2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 1 K, 14.40 ERA
Jhancarlos Lara got the start and ended up getting rocked, as he allowed seven runs over two innings of work. Lara allowed six hits and three walks, picking up just one strikeout in the process before being chased very early. Lara just didn’t have his command in this one and actually threw more balls than he did strikes, as just 29 of his 59 pitches were strikes. Fortunately the Columbus pen allowed just two more runs the rest of the way. Jonathan Hughes allowed both of those runs, picking up some of the slack and giving the Clingstones three innings out of the pen. Then a group of Shay Schanaman, Blane Abeyta, and Hayden Harris each pitched a scoreless inning to finish off things from the pitching side.
Offensively the Clingstones didn’t have any trouble putting up runs. The trio of Kevin Kilpatrick Jr., David McCabe, and Cade Bunnell all reached base three times. Kilpatrick was three for five with a run scored, while McCabe was one for three with a pair of walks and had a double. Bunnell was two for four with a walk, also doubled, and batted in three runs. That trio was joined by Drew Compton, Kobe Kato, and Dylan Shockley as having multi-hit games, with Kato and Shockley adding doubles in the loss.
Swing and Misses
Jonathan Hughes - 4
Bowling Green Hot Rods 3, Rome Emperors 2
Box Score
Stephen Paolini, DH: 2-4, R, .300/.375/.450
Ambioris Tavarez, SS: 0-3, R, SB, .294/.385/.441
Adam Maier, SP: 4.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K, 6.23 ERA
Adam Maier got the start and was another name prospect to struggle with his command on Sunday. Maier went four and two thirds, allowing two runs on a hit and four walks as he struck out three. Maier landed just 42 of his 80 pitches for strikes, but gutted his way through almost five innings with just the two runs allowed. Cory Wall followed with an inning and a third, before Luis Vargas and Austin Smith each went an inning, and none of that trio allowed a run to score. LJ McDonough came in for the ninth in a 2-2 game and allowed a run to score while recording just one out.
Offensively no one really had a remarkable game as six different batters recorded hits, though only Stephen Paolini had a two-hit afternoon and a Joe Olsavsky double was the lone extra base knock. Ambioris Tavarez was hitless in three at bats, but stole a base and scored a run.
Swing and Misses
Adam Maier - 7
Cory Wall - 6
Hickory Crawdads 4, Augusta GreenJackets 3
Box Score
Owen Carey, RF: 3-5, R, 3 SB, .303/.343/.394
Eric Hartman, LF: 1-4, BB, 2 R, RBI, SB, .258/.395/.484
Colby Jones, 2B: 1-1, 3 BB, 2 SB, .308/.471/.385
Luis Arestigueta, SP: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 4.50 ERA
Samuel Mejia, RP: 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 7.94 ERA
It was Luis Arestigueta’s turn on Sunday, and Arestigueta went four innings while allowing two runs on five hits and no walks with four punch outs before giving way to Samuel Mejia. Mejia went three innings and also allowed two runs, on two hits and a walk, as he recorded six strikeouts. Mejia picked up 13 swings and misses over his three innings of work, while Arestigueta had eight. Reibyn Corona pitched the final inning, not allowing a run to score and giving up just one walk.
The Augusta offense was going crazy on the bases in this one. Owen Carey was three for five with a run, and stole three of the six total bases that the GreenJackets took. Colby Jones reached base four times by going one for one with three walks, and stole two more bags, while Eric Hartman was one for four with a walk and stole the final base on the day. In addition Isaiah Drake was one for three with a walk and both Mac Guscette and Mason Guerra drew a pair of walks each in the loss.
Swing and Misses
Samuel Mejia - 13
Luis Arestigueta - 8
