The Braves look to get a fresh arm on the staff as the road trip continues. The Braves started Sunday with a roster move that could be quite interesting from several perspectives as this next week progresses. AJ Smith-Shawver was optioned to the minors while, in a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Michael Petersen was recalled to join the Braves on their road trip.

Smith-Shawver, as in his previous stints in the majors, has had a mixed bag of success and struggles so far this season. He has a 4.61 ERA across 13.2 innings in three starts. While he has produced 17 strikeouts, he also has allowed 19 hits and 8 walks. The Braves likely hope he will improve on his control as he works in the minors in the near future.
Michael Petersen will join the Braves on their current road trip to provide a fresh arm to the staff. He has been with the Braves organization for less than two weeks, as he was acquired from the Angels on April 1st. He made his MLB debut last year, and pitched 19 2⁄3 innings for the Dodgers and Marlins in 2024. He had a 5.95 ERA across 16 games as a reliever.
Of course, the most significant takeaways from this move is what it means for the starting rotation. With an open spot now in the rotation, Spencer Strider’s return to the Braves and 2025 MLB debut could be mere days away. It will be interesting to see how the Braves continue to manage their staff through the rest of April, as Strider and others could make an impact in the majors much sooner than later.
