On a day with five games, Didier Fuentes is the biggest prospect on the hill. Isaiah Drake looks to continue his hot start to the season. Saturday is a full slate in the Atlanta Braves system with five games, due to a rainout yesterday. The top prospect on the pitching schedule is Didier Fuentes, as he tries to put a tough command game in his season debut behind him. On the hitting side both Isaiah Drake and David McCabe look to continue their hot streaks after each one started the weekend with a multi-hit game on Friday.
Schedule
Gwinnett Stripers at Norfolk Tide 5:35 p.m. Game 1
GWN: Chad Kuhl — 0-2, 9.35 ERA
NOR: Brandon Young — 1-0, 0.00 ERA
Streaming — MiLB.TV
The first game for Gwinnett will see Chad Kuhl taking on Brandon Young. Kuhl made his first start of the season last week, after beginning the season coming out of the bullpen, and the big league vet hopes to turn it around going up against a pitcher in Young who hasn’t allowed a run through his first two starts of the season. Young is one of the Orioles Top 20 prospects on Pipeline (#19) and will provide an interesting test for the experienced Striper lineup.
Gwinnett Stripers at Norfolk Tide Time TBD. Game 2
GWN: TBD
NOR: Raul Alcantara — 0-1, 5.06 ERA
Streaming — MiLB.TV
Game 2 is the makeup of the game from yesterday that got rained out. Original Friday starter Raul Alcantara is set to go for Norfolk, while the Stripers haven’t announced a starter for this one yet - though it may end up being Nathan Wiles, who was the scheduled Friday starter. The time for this game is set to start shortly after the completion of the first game.
Columbus Clingstones at Biloxi Shuckers 7:05 p.m.
COL: TBD
Biloxi: Nate Peterson — 0-1, 3.00 ERA
Streaming — MiLB.TV
The Columbus starter isn’t officially named yet, so the guy to watch in this one is David McCabe, who continued his hot start to the year last night with a pair of doubles to bring his OPS to 1.308 on the young season.
Rome Emperors at Bowling Green Hot Rods 3:05 p.m.
ROM: Didier Fuentes — 0-1, 18.00 ERA
BG: Gary Gill Hill — 0-0, 2.25 ERA
Streaming — MiLB.TV
Didier Fuentes is on the mound and hoping to bounce back from a tough first start to his season, where he lasted just two innings due to struggles with his command in his High-A debut. The command struggles aren’t a normal thing for Fuentes, who walked just 2.5 batters per nine innings for Augusta last year, so it’s not unreasonable to expect better in this outing.
Speaking of bouncing back, the Rome lineup is also hoping to do that after committing as many errors as they had hits in last night’s game (two). Unfortunately for them they have to do it against a pitcher, in Gary Gill Hill, who ranks as the Rays #12 prospect according to Pipeline. Ambioris Tavarez remains the player to watch in the Rome lineup, and despite his 0-4, three strikeout game yesterday, still has a .900 OPS for the year.
Augusta GreenJackets at Hickory Crawdads 7:00 p.m.
AUG: Rayven Antonio — 0-0, N/A ERA
HIC: Aneudis Mejia — 0-0, 13.50 ERA
Streaming
Augusta is starting 19-year-old Rayven Antonio for his first appearance of the season. The young right-hander made five appearances (four starts) with Augusta last year after posting an eye popping 1.95 ground ball to fly ball ratio in 27 innings for the FCL squad. Antonio isn’t a big strikeout guy, but if he can produce a similar ground ball ratio in full season ball, it could start to open some eyes for a future role for him.
Isaiah Drake was one of the guys to watch yesterday and deserves to be named here again, following a game where he went two for four with a double, walked, and stole a base. For a player who struggled - when he was even healthy last year, it will be interesting to watch if the toolsy outfielder has in fact turned a corner in terms of his development at the plate.
