It was nearly an even split, at that. The final tally of the poll we ran earlier this week is almost a dead heat. 51% think the Braves get to 89 wins or better. 49% believe the Atlanta Braves finish at 88 wins or worse. That generally means the line was set at exactly the right number but I was expecting a bit more negativity considering the team was 2-8 when the poll went out.

Optimism may grow even more next week when we likely see Spencer Strider pitch on a major league mound for the first time in over a year. He spent the last couple of weeks baptizing a bunch of poor minor leaguers and though the team hasn’t confirmed it, he’ll most likely make his debut on this upcoming road trip.
Theres also been small signs of life from the offense. Austin Riley had a good series against Philadelphia. Sean Murphy has had a strong return to the lineup. Maybe the exciting walk-off win from Thursday night along with heading to a launching pad in south Florida to play the Rays for 3 games will get the offense humming. But an 0-7 hole is tough to dig out of and the margin of error both on the field and on the injured list has mostly been used up already.
Braves do have Bryce Elder and AJ Smith-Shawver pitching the next two games, so they very likely will need to score a decent amount of runs this weekend to win games. We’ll see how they respond.
