The longtime big league hurler lost his life far too soon in a tragic accident In tragic news involving a former Atlanta Braves player, Octavio Dotel has passed away at the age of 51 as a result of injuries suffered during an awful roof collapse at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic.
Dotel was initially reported to have survived the collapse and had been transported to the hospital following the incident. Unfortunately, the injuries were too much for him to recover from and multiple reports (from Héctor Gomez and Mike Rodriguez) have come out that Dotel has indeed passed away.
Octavio Dotel made his major league debut in 1999 with the New York Mets and stayed around in the big leagues until 2013. Along the way, he was part of the 2011 World Series-winning St. Louis Cardinals team and he also made a stop here in Atlanta with the Braves after the Royals traded him in exchange for Kyle Davies.
While Dotel’s stint with the Braves was extremely short (nine games, in fact), it’s still extremely commendable that he was able to carve out a path for himself in Major League Baseball as a journeyman pitcher and there’s a very good reason why he was able to stick around for as long as he did. When Dotel retired, he was the MLB record-holder for most teams played for, as he had collected 13 different jerseys over the course of his career.
The Associated Press is reporting that up to 160 other people were injured in the roof collapse and upwards of 40 people have died as a result — including the governor of the northwestern Dominican Republic province of Montecristi and sister of former big leaguer Nelson Cruz, Nelsy Cruz. Plain and simple, this is an awful tragedy and I sincerely wish peace and comfort to those who are suffering in this time.
