Atlanta Braves news and notes from Thursday. The Atlanta Braves have yet to win a game this season, but hopefully that will change during this weekend’s home opener at Truist Park. The 0-7 Braves play a three game set against the Miami Marlins, beginning tonight at 7:15 ET. Spencer Schwellenbach, who was brilliant in his first appearance of the year, is scheduled to start. He will duel right-hander Max Meyer.
Saturday night’s game is also scheduled for 7:15 ET, with AJ Smith-Shawver on the mound against an unannounced Marlins pitcher. Smith-Shawver turned in an underwhelming start to begin the week, surrendering two runs in four innings.
The series will wrap up on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 ET with Grant Holmes getting the ball in the finale. He’s already made two appearances this season and enters with a 7.20 ERA. The Marlins have not yet announced their starter.
Hopefully, the Braves do the exact opposite of what they’ve done thus far and finally get in the win column!
More Braves News:
The Braves acquired catcher Jason Delay from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations. He was optioned to Double-A Columbus. To open up a spot on the 40-man roster, Reynaldo López was transferred to the 60-day injured list. The club also announced that Jesse Chavez was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett, but he opted for free agency.
David O’Brien of the Athletic writes up Brian Snitker’s take on the brutal beginning to the season.
In case you missed the Braves’ horrendous road trip to open the season, here’s the highlights (?) of the series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
MLB News:
Houston Astros right-hander Luis Garcia will be shut down for four more weeks due to inflammation in his elbow. He will be reevaluated at the end of the four week period.
The Los Angeles Dodgers placed first baseman Freddie Freeman on the 10-day injured list with an ankle sprain. The move is retroactive to March 31.
