An active day of roster moves as the Braves leave Florida. It has been an active day for the Atlanta Braves as they exit Florida and head to Arizona for their final two games of Spring Training 2025.
After announcing the signing of Jesse Chavez this morning and then trading Ian Anderson this afternoon, the Braves made a series of other roster moves after today’s games.
The #Braves today acquired LHP José Suarez from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for RHP Ian Anderson. The club also optioned RHP Bryce Elder to Triple-A Gwinnett and reassigned RHP Jesse Chavez, RHP Craig Kimbrel and C James McCann to minor league camp.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) March 23, 2025
Notable was the reassignment of the just-signed Jesse Chavez to the minor league camp. He joins reliever Craig Kimbrel and catcher James McCann who were both signed last week. Kimbrel and McCann both played with Baltimore last sea catcher James McCann son.
The Braves also optioned pitcher Bryce Elder, 25, to Triple-A. Elder, and All-Star in 2023, has pitched in 51 games with Atlanta during the past three seasons, making 50 starts.
Kimbrel, 36, is fifth all-time in career saves. He is rejoining the team with whom he debuted in 2010 and pitched until being traded prior to Opening Day in 2015. Kimbrel is the Braves franchise leader in saves with 186. Should he and Chavez make the 26-man roster, it will mark the first time the two long-time veterans will have been teammates since 2010.
McCann, 34, will provide the Braves with another veteran backstop option should Sean Murphy encounter a delay returning from a fractured rib. Top prospect Drake Baldwin is expected to start for the Braves at catcher on Opening Day.
The Braves also added veteran outfielder Alex Verdugo on a major league deal last week. Verdugo agreed to be optioned since he had not been with a team during Spring Training.
