The lefty outfielder had a tough season in New York and now he’ll be hoping to turn it around in Atlanta The Atlanta Braves have apparently decided to do a lot of their business during spring training because the moves just keep on coming. Just a couple of days after signing Craig Kimbrel and then opening up a pair of roster spots by sending both of their Rule 5 Draft picks back to their original teams, the Braves have acted quickly to fill one of those roster spots as they’ve signed outfielder Alex Verdugo to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million. Jon Heyman of the New York Post was the first to report the news.
Alex Verdugo to Braves. $1.5M.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) March 20, 2025
Alex Verdugo has had a rough go of it at the plate over his past two seasons — he only hit .233/.291/.356 with a .283 wOBA and 83 wRC+ for the Yankees last season and that was after he finished his last season with the Red Sox with a .264/.324/.421 slash line, .322 wOBA and 98 wRC+. That sound you hear is our friends at Pinstripe Alley celebrating that it’s now guaranteed they won’t have to watch him at the plate anymore.
However, he did provide some value with his glove as he finished last season with an Outs Above Average of 2 (good for being placed in the 77th percentile in that metric) and he has a cannon for an arm. Having a reliable defender who can play all three outfield positions as a backup should come in handy for the long season ahead and it appears that that will be the role for Verdugo as he joins his third team in three seasons.
Shortly after news of the deal broke, the Braves confirmed it on their Twitter account and also noted that he’s already been optioned to the Gwinnett Stripers. Let’s hope he and Craig Kimbrel get along, as both of them will be spending time in Gwinnett to get ready for the upcoming season.
