Completely relatable! Earlier this week, Drake Baldwin ended up being a late scratch from a spring training game due to dealing with a “reaction.” The Atlanta Braves didn’t specify what the allergy was, so we were all left to commiserate with Baldwin during his allergy woes and wonder what it could’ve been that knocked him down on that particular day.
Well, it’s time to wonder no more, as the culprit has finally been revealed. It was walnuts.
Drake Baldwin's allergic reaction on Wednesday came after he unknowingly ate something that included walnuts. He's fine today.— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) March 14, 2025
So the good news is that it wasn’t a prolonged allergic reaction, which means that Baldwin appears to be good to go going forward. With that being said, it’s definitely relatable. Studies have shown that at least 33 million Americans suffer from some type of food allergy (myself, included) and nut allergies are one of the most common causes. If you’re like me then you know that suffering an allergic reaction is no joke — and if it’s a severe enough one, it could be a matter of life-and-death. So while it seems kind of quaint that walnuts, of all things, managed to knock down a professional ballplayer, it’s still one of those things where we should all be breathing a sigh of relief that it wasn’t anything too serious and that Baldwin’s going to be just fine.
So there you have it: Drake Baldwin has a walnut allergy and now the entirety of the National League and Major League Baseball knows what his weakness is. Fortunately, that doesn’t seem to affect him once he actually gets on the field, so there’s that. Keep the walnuts away from him!
