Despite being a minor league free agent, Drew had very solid success in 2024 and is looking to enter 2025 with guaranteed playing time and a chance to really showcase his skills at the plate. How Acquired
Drew Compton was a 2023 minor league free agent signing by the Atlanta Braves.
Preseason Report Card
As a minor league free agent - there were not many expectations heading into 2024 for Drew. Before reporting to the Braves, Drew hit .306/.397/.552 in his Junior year at Georgia Tech. Drew’s professional career got off to a good start as he hit .263/.300/.684 in 6 games down in complex ball. Those numbers, along with his age, were enough for the Braves to promote him to Low-A Augusta where he would slash .243/.346/.342 in 31 games.
What We Saw in 2024
Drew found some solid success in 2024 as he worked across two levels of play. Drew started his season at Low-A Augusta where he would appear in 43 games and be one of the teams most consistent hitters, putting together quality at bats as well as quality results as he slashed .295/.406/.430. His strikeout rate sat at just 18% while he walked 14.5% of the time - showing a really solid approach at the plate.
His positional versatility helped him a lot, as he was able to provide value at first, and third with it being known he could also provide decent defense in the outfield. He found his home mainly at first base so while he played quite well, you would like to see just a bit more power at that possession. That said, the Braves promoted him to High-A Rome where the numbers remained relatively consistent. While he got off to a bit of a slow start, as anyone could imagine from the increase in talent from Low-A to High-A, Drew still hit .285/.387/.405 and saw his strikeout rate fall to 16.5% while his walk rate sat at a comfortable 12%.
2025 Outlook
While he doesn’t have the tools that stand out, Drew is one of the organizations top offensive prospects due to his ability to limit strikeouts, get on base, and hit for a decent average. Because he’s mainly playing first base now, you would like to see him hit for more power but as a minor league free agent his contributions to the organization are already higher than a lot of others.
With his age (23), and his college experience there is a chance that Drew begins the season at Double-A, where if he continues to hit like he did at Rome - will really make a name for himself within the organization.
