Brian Snitker received four third-place votes and finished fifth in NL Manager of the Year voting for 2024. BBWAA Awards Week continued to roll on. One day after the Rookie of the Year Awards were announced, Tuesday evening was when the focus shifted towards the Manager of the Year Awards. Cleveland Guardians manager (and former Atlanta Braves player) Steven Vogt won the AL Manager of the Year award, while Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy took home the honor of being named the NL Manager of the Year award in 2024.
Steven Vogt didn’t win the AL Manager of the Year award in unanimous fashion but he came pretty close. Vogt took home 27 first-place votes with only two second-place votes and one third-place vote. Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quataro finished a distant and clear second place with 19 second-place votes, two first-place votes and six third-place votes. Detroit Tigers skipper A.J. Hinch was the obvious third-place finisher, as he finished with 18 third-place votes, six second-place votes and just one first-place vote.
Vogt became just the ninth manager to win Manager of the Year in their first season as an MLB manager, with Skip Schmaker pulling off the feat last year with the Miami Marlins and Rocco Baldelli being the last AL manager to do it when he won the award back in 2019. Vogt is also the quickest in the history of the award to go from being a player to winning Manager of the Year, as he had only just retired as a player back in 2022.
Over in the NL, Pat Murphy took home the NL Manager of the Year award in just as dominant fashion as Vogt did in the AL. Murphy racked up 27 of the 30 first-place votes on offer and also received three second-place votes, so he was a clear winner here. San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt was the runner-up as he received 19 second-place votes, eight third-place votes and a single first-place vote. Carlos Mendoza came in third with one first place vote, six second place votes and 12 third-place votes. Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker received four third-place votes and for some reason, Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson received one first place vote.
Pat Murphy made history of his own, as he became the first Milwaukee Brewers manager in franchise history to win Manager of the Year. Murphy took over a Brewers squad that was largely expected to fall off after a bunch of key departures and the rest of the NL Central bolstering their squad. Instead of falling off, Murphy helped guide the Brewers to yet another NL Central title and now he’s been recognized with his first Manager of the Year award.
BBWAA Awards week continues on Wednesday night with the Cy Young Awards, which figures to be a big night for the Atlanta Braves since Chris Sale is a huge favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award. We’ll know who’s won each award 24 hours from now.
