BBWAA Awards week is underway and the Rookie of the Year awards have kicked off the week of festivities. BBWAA Awards week is underway and we’re getting things started with the announcement of the winners of the 2024 Rookie of the Year Awards. There was no surprise on the National League side of things as Paul Skenes was named the NL Rookie of the Year, while XX took home the honors of being named the AL Rookie of the Year.
While Skenes was largely expected to win the NL Rookie of the Year award, it wasn’t a unanimous decision like what we saw last year when Corbin Carroll ran away with it. Jackson Merrill had an excellent rookie season in his own right and racked up seven first-place votes on his way to a runner-up finish.
However, Paul Skenes was always going to be the winner and his 23 first-place votes reflect that. Skenes finished the season with an ERA- of 46 and a FIP- of 61 over 23 starts and 133 innings pitched. As The Athletic mentioned in their article covering Paul Skenes, if you take ERA+ (211) into consideration then Skenes just had the most dominant rookie season since Steve Rogers racked up an ERA+ of 245 all the way back in 1973.
Meanwhile in the AL, we were guaranteed that a representative from the AL East was going to win the award for the second season in a row. It was only a question of whether or not the Orioles wold get a second-consecutive Rookie of the Year award winner or if the Yankees would get one. It turned out that a Yankees player would be getting the award and it ended up going to Luis Gil.
It was certainly a tight vote, as Colton Cowser got 11 second-place votes and 13 first-place votes. However, Gil took the honors by accumulating 15 first-place votes and 10 second-place votes in order to win it by five points. Gil finished the season with an ERA- of 87 and a FIP- of 98, as he exploded out of the gates and took full advantage of the opportunity that he was given to stick around in New York’s rotation.
More award winners will be revealed throughout the week, as we’ll know who the Manager of the Year award winners are by this time tomorrow night. .
