It was jarring news at the start of free agency. Just before 8PM Eastern, multiple reports came out that Atlanta Braves reliever Joe Jiménez may miss the 2025 season after having surgery to repair an issue with his left knee.

Jiménez was one of Atlanta’s key high-leverage relievers in 2024 appearing in 69 games with a 0.990 WHIP. A free agent after the 2023 season, Atlanta signed him to a three-year, $26M that runs through the 2026 season.
Jiménez was amongst the best right-handed set-up men in the National League this season with a 2.48 xERA and above-average to borderline elite metric thanks in part to an increased usage of his slider. He struck out 10.7 batters per nine innings last season.
Earlier today, the Braves declined the option on fellow right-handed reliever Luke Jackson’s club option for 2025.
The loss of Jiménez is a significant blow to the team’s bullpen construction in 2025. They will return Pierce Johnson, Dylan Lee and closer Raisel Iglesias. A.J. Minter and Jesse Chavez are free agents.
The Braves will also return Aaron Bummer to their late-inning corp next season after extending his contract two days ago.
