A review of 2024 for Braves top draft choice Cam Caminiti. Cam Caminiti was the first round pick of the Atlanta Braves earlier this summer, a hyped prospect who was able to slide down the draft a bit further than expected and into the Braves hands.
How Acquired
Cam Caminiti was selected with the 24th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Saguaro HS in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Preseason Report Card
There wasn’t exactly one since he wasn’t drafted until July, but for the years leading into the draft he was seen as the top prep left-handed pitcher in this class - after reclassifying up into the 2024 MLB Draft. He didn’t turn 18 until a month after the draft, but already hit 98 MPH with his fastball, has a slider and curve that have flashed as swing and miss pitches, and the feel for a changeup that still needs plenty of work and reps. Caminiti is also already a strike thrower and a high-end athlete, to the point where he would have been drafted as a hitter this year if he wanted to go that path - however he wouldn’t have been nearly as high of a selection as a bat.
What we saw in 2024
We didn’t get to see much from him as a pro, as he made one appearance for Low-A Augusta after signing on August 31. He went three innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit and no walks, striking out four. He threw 41 pitches, 31 of them for strikes, in that appearance.
2025 outlook
It is safe to assume that Caminiti will start the season back in Low-A to open the season. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get himself to High-A at some point during the year either, but it’s hard to see the Braves being more aggressive than that with a first year pro who will still be 18-years-old for the bulk of the minor league season. The 2025 season will be about gaining reps and refining the little things as well as gaining strength and working on the changeup that he didn't need to use much at the high school level.
