In his first season in the National League, Chris Sale dominated in 29 starts for Atlanta. Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Chris Sale enjoyed a bounce-back season - his best since 2017 - and in doing so helped the team to its seventh postseason appearance in a row.
Sale’s 2024 campaign was also a historical one for the presumptive favorite for the National League Cy Young Award as he won the National League pitcher’s Triple Crown by leading the league in wins, total strikeouts and ERA (for qualified starters).

Sale, who the Braves acquired from the Boston Red Sox in an off-season trade for infielder Vaughn Grissom, exceeded exceptions in Atlanta with a 18-3 record in 29 starts. Despite not being able to make his 30th start of the season on the last day of the regular season, the right-hander still led the NL with 225 strikeouts and 2.38ERA in 177.2 innings pitched - good for 6.3 fWAR.
The 35-year-old finished at or near to the top on numerous categories in the National League. He finished first in strikeouts per nine innings and home runs allowed per nine innings; he also finished second in WHIP and strikeout to walk ratio.
According to the Baseball Savant, he finished with a 100 rating in pitching run value and breaking run value. He finished the season with a rating of 92 or better in off-speed run value, xERA, average exit velocity, chase percentage, whiff percentage, strikeout percentage and hard-hit percentage. His slider had a sterling 24 run value in 2024.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal who won the American League pitcher’s Triple Crown this season with a 18-4 record, 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts.
Sale is the first National League pitcher to win the pitcher’s Triple Crown since Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw in 2011. Sale is the first Braves pitcher to achieve the feat in the modern era and the third in franchise history.
John Clarkson (1889) and Tommy Bond (1877) were the Braves franchise’s other pitcher’s Triple Crown winners.
