Chris Sale’s unfortunately-timed injury has resulted in Bryce Elder and AJ Smith-Shawver getting another opportunity here in the Postseason. The Atlanta Braves have officially revealed their roster for the NL Wild Card Series against the San Diego Padres and as you would expect, Chris Sale is not on the roster. However, the Braves may have given us a very strong hint as to who’s going to be starting games for the Braves for the next 2-3 days.
Here’s the roster:

Bryce Elder and AJ Smith-Shawver are both on the roster, which means that it’s likely that we’re going to see one or both of them starting at some point during this series. Elder’s last big league appearnce took place on August 6, which is when the Brewers teed off on him to the tune of seven runs on eight hits, including two homers. This was after he went into the seventh inning against that same Brewers team a few days earlier, so there’s that. Either way, you know what to expect from Elder at this point, which is to give him an extremely short leash while he’s out there.
Meanwhile, Smith-Shawver could me making his first start since May 23 against the Cubs, which was his only start of the campaign. Smith-Shawver didn’t go deep in that one as he was unable to get out of the fifth inning but he did keep the Cubs off of the scoreboard while only giving up three hits and two walks and striking out four in the process. Still, you’d like to see him used with a short leash as well. The back end of the bullpen may be a bit weary after yesterday’s intense doubleheader but we’re still talking about a unit that has mostly been very good since the All-Star break.
As far as the rest of the roster is concerned, the only real surprise is that Adam Duvall has been left off of the roster. With that being said, Duvall definitely took on a bench role in the final month of the season so I guess it’s hard to say that it’s a surprise that they couldn’t find a spot for Duvall here. The other thing that could qualify as a surprise is that Ian Anderson didn’t crack the roster either. Still, Atlanta went with plenty of options as far as pitching is concerned so they definitely won’t be short-handed in that regard.
This is who the Braves will be going with as they start what will hopefully be a long Postseason journey tonight. They could go deep into October just as easily as they could do the good ol’ fashioned “0-2 and BBQ” routine. Either way, this is who they’ll be relying on and it’s up to these guys to hopefully push the Braves further into the Postseason.
