Atlanta may be without one of the NL’s best starting pitcher against the Padres. In the post-game media scrum after the Atlanta Braves postseason clinching victory against the New York Mets, Braves manager Brian Snitker shared with reporters that he doesn’t expect starting pitcher Chris Sale to be available for the Wild Card series against the San Diego Padres.

Sale, the presumptive front-runner for the National League Cy Young Award after going 18-3 in 29 starts, is dealing with back issues as was revealed earlier this afternoon when it was announced that he would not be starting the final game of the regular season.
Sale first felt the back discomfort during the second inning of his start in Cincinnati. That’s when his velo dropped below 90 mph. He kept thinking he could pitch until the discomfort worsened last night.— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) September 30, 2024
If Sale is not able to pitch against the Padres, that will further deplete a Braves pitching staff who had to play five games in four games leading into the start of Tuesday’s Wild Card series.
