The Braves, who send their players to the Peoria Javelinas sent a total of seven players to the offseason league including position players Drake Baldwin, and David McCabe along with Adam Maier, Hayden Harris, Ryan Bourassa, Isaac Gallegos, and Landon Harper.
Drake Baldwin, of course, is considered by some as the Braves top prospect and put together a sensational 2024 campaign that saw him move on some Top 100 lists. He is likely just getting additional work in as Atlanta staff evaluate and decide how to best utilize his talents next year. On the other spectrum is David McCabe who missed a majority of the season due to Tommy John surgery. David appeared in just 35 games and had a sub .500 OPS so getting more work for him is absolutely necessary as he will enter next year at 25 years of age in what will be a very crucial season for his development.
On the pitching side of things the group is highlighted by starting pitcher Adam Maier who struggled just a bit after being promoted to High-A Rome, as he saw his walk rate balloon up to 4.39 per 9 innings.
Joining him are four relievers who had very intriguing seasons. Hayden Harris found his way to Triple-A Gwinnett this year and kept up his outstanding strikeout numbers - tallying an absurd 14.3 K/9, but he continued to struggle with his command as his walk rate also moved up to 6.55 per 9. Some additional work, and refined command could see Hayden battle for a spot in the Braves bullpen as soon as next season. Ryan Bourassa was absolutely outstanding at Rome where he appeared in 25 games and had a 13.97 K/9 to go with a 3.41 BB/9 rate. A free agent signing in 2023, Ryan has really opened eyes and has put himself firmly in discussion for potential Atlanta relievers in the future. Next is Isaac Gallegos who opened eyes this year but pitched a total of 27 innings in 2024. Isaac had a 23 K/9 rate in complex ball, 14.29 per 9 in Augusta, and 11.84 in Rome. Finally, that takes us to Landon Harper who played two roles, pretty successfully, for both Rome and Mississippi. While the strikeout rates aren’t where you would want them be for a reliever, there’s no denying the command that Landon has as he had walk rates of just 1.69 and 1.59 across his two levels in a rather substantial 77 innings of work.
The league kicks off October 7th and lasts until the middle of November.
