The Stripers lost to Jacksonville despite having a better day at the plate. Despite getting a solid outing from starter Drue Hackenberg, Gwinnett failed to get the bats going, losing the only minor league game for Atlanta’s affiliates on Friday.
(72-76) Gwinnett Stripers 2, (71-76) Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 3
Luke Williams, 1B: 3-4, HR, RBI, R
Drake Baldwin, C: 1-5, 2B
Justin Dean, CF: 4-4, 2B
Drue Hackenberg, SP: 5.2 IP, 2 H, ER, 4 BB, 4 K
Box Score
Despite outhitting Jacksonville 11-3, Gwinnett came up short in the Stripers’ 3-2 loss against the Jumbo Shrimp on Friday.
Offensively, things were stagnant for both teams as both Gwinnett and Jacksonville were held scoreless through the first five innings. The Stripers finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Luke Williams launched a solo homer over the left field wall to stake Gwinnett to a 1-0 lead. After Harold Ramirez reached on an error, a Luis Liberato single brought him home to extend the lead to 2-0 over the Jumbo Shrimp. Jacksonville would ultimately get one of those runs back in the home half of the inning, cutting the Gwinnett lead in half at 2-1.
Starter Drue Hackenberg matched his counterpart pitch-for-pitch in this one. Across 5.2 innings, the righty scattered just two hits while allowing one run. However, Hackenberg allowed four walks while striking out four on the night.
After the Stripers held Jacksonville scoreles in the seventh, relievers Parker Dunshee and Hayden Harris allowed the Jumbo Shrimp to score twice to take a 3-2 lead over Gwinnett in the home half of the eighth inning. While only leading by one run, Jacksonville was able to stave off any comeback attempt by the Stripers, as Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Drake Baldwin struck out in back-to-back at-bats to end the game with two runners in scoring position.
