At least the Braves still won? Let’s start off with some good news, shall we? The Atlanta Braves absolutely smacked the Cincinnati Reds on their way out of Ohio in order to win their series. That was awesome! Yesterday’s game was really fun to watch, which was a real and true relief since usually easy wins for the Braves seem to coincide with someone getting sacrificed to the baseball gods as an injury offering. Nope — the Braves won and everybody was okay.
That’s where the good news ends, as both the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks went on to defeat their first-place opponents on Thursday night. Let’s get into it.
New York Mets (85-68) 10, Philadelphia Phillies (91-62) 6
Box Score | Savant | Condensed Game
The Phillies are currently playing to clinch their spot in the postseason, with the divisional title being not far behind. Philadelphia’s postseason magic number is currently at just one and they needed just any result in the East involving the Braves and Mets to go their way. It didn’t happen, as the Braves destroyed the Reds and the Mets once again gave the Phillies fits on their way to a 10-6 victory.
It’s been a very tough season for Taijuan Walker and the Mets exacerbated his frustrations by tagging him for a whopping eight runs over 3.1 innings. This included four dingers for the Mets — Mark Vientos and Pete Alonso went back-to-back in the first inning, Brandon Nimmo hit a deep fly in the third inning and then Francisco Alvarez made it four dingers on the night with a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Brandon Nimmo doubled off of José Ruiz later on in the fourth inning to add that eighth and final run to Walker’s line for the night. The Mets ended that inning with nine runs on the board and then Luisangel Acuña made it an even 10 runs with an RBI triple in the seventh inning. We miss you, Ronald.
Arizona Diamondbacks (85-68) 5, Milwaukee Brewers (88-65) 1
Box Score | Savant | Condensed Game
It was hangover day for the Brewers after they clinched the NL Central. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are currently fighting tooth-and-nail to lock down a spot in the Postseason, so we pretty much got the result that we were expecting here. The game remained scoreless through four innings but that changed in the fifth, which is when they turned a pair of leadoff walks into a rally that ended with three runs being put on the board and on Tobias Myers’ line for the night.
Mlilwaukee responded with a solo homer from Garrett Mitchell in the seventh inning but that one run was all that Brandon Pfaadt gave up on the night, as he pitched seven strong innings and struck out 12 Brewers batters while only giving up two hits and zero walks. The Diamondbacks eventually got that run back and then one extra in the eighth inning, which is when Houston Astros sleep paralysis demon Pavin Smith hit his eighth homer of the season to bring us to the eventual final score of 5-1. So yeah, this was a typical hangover game for the Brewers and the Diamondbacks took care of business on the road.
Here are the current standings with Playoff Odds from FanGraphs. It’s getting late real fast for the Braves, folks.
