The pending return of injured second baseman Ozzie Albies could have a waterfall effect on the team’s infield. This afternoon, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman posted that the pending return of injured second baseman Ozzie Albies will likely shift current starting second baseman Whit Merrifield across the diamond to third base due to Merrifield’s fractured foot.
Merrifield said his fractured foot would bother him in the outfield. So, you're more likely to see him at third base once Albies returns on Friday. Merrifield provides more offensively than Urshela.— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) September 18, 2024
Atlanta, who has three player currently injured with fractures - include the fractured wrist of the returning Albies and the currently out-of-action Austin Riley, may be limited to using Merrifield at third base since the super-utility man may not be able to play the outfield due to his foot fracture.
That could shift Riley’s replacement, Gio Urshela, to the bench, although Urshela does have extensive MLB experience at shortstop.
The AJC’s Justin Tuscano posted that Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker is still trying to determine what role Merrifield will have, but didn’t commit as to whether or not that would be at third base.
I asked Brian Snitker about Whit Merrifield's role when Ozzie Albies returns. Snit said he's still trying to figure all of that out. It sounds like Merrifield will still have some sort of role, as Snit said the at-bats have been good and his speed is impactful.— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) September 18, 2024
Coming into tonight’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, the Braves have 11 games left to claw back into the the last Wild Card spot.
Albies will be in the line-up again for the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers on rehabilitation assignment. He was previously reported that Albies will be limited to batting right-handed upon his return to Atlanta.
Like the last half of this season has been for Atlanta, it appears how exactly the Braves lineup will shake out once Albies returns is just a shrug emoji.
