Gwinnett routed Nashville on Friday thanks to a solid pitching performance from Bryce Elder and an all-around offensive outpouring.
The first run of the game came in the top of the third inning as the Stripers took a 2-0 lead over the Sounds. Alejo Lopez laced a one-out single before Nacho Alvarez Jr. homered over the left field wall to make it a 2-0 game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Nashville scored their only run of the game — an unearned run off of Stripers’ starter Bryce Elder — to cut the Gwinnett lead to 2-1 in the early going. Across six innings, Elder scattered just three hits while issuing four walks and striking out 11 in his start.
In the top of the fifth, Justin Dean ledoff with a single and proceeded to steal second base. After stealing third base, Dean scored on an Alvarez Jr. fielder’s choice to extend the lead to 3-1. The Stripers would break things open in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs.
J.P. Martinez worked a one-out walk and proceeded to advance to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, Justin Dean singled into center field to score Martinez and extend the lead to 4-1. Alejo Lopez then homered to score Dean to make it a 6-1 game in favor of Gwinnett.
In the top of the ninth, Martinez would single home Chadwick Tromp to extend the Stripers lead to 7-1 on the night. Meanwhile on the mound, relievers Domingo Gonzalez and Jimmy Herget capped off the stellar pitching performance on the night by tossing three combined scoreless innings to seal the Gwinnett 7-1 win on the night.
(61-67) Mississippi Braves 0, (81-47) Tennessee Smokies 3 (GAME ONE)
Cal Conley, SS: 2-3, 2B
Yolmer Sanchez, 2B: 2-3
Ian Mejia, SP: 4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
Box Score
What was supposed to be a doubleheader for Mississippi turned into just one game on Friday as Mother Nature had other ideas. And in that one contest, the Braves came up short as they were shutout by Tennessee in the 3-0 loss.
Offensively, it was a rough go of it for the Braves, as two of their four total hits came in the first two innings in the loss. While Mississippi managed to put a runner on third base in the bottom of the sixth, the Braves failed to bring him across.
Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second and later extended their lead to 3-0 by scoring twice more in the top of the fourth inning. Mississippi starter Ian Mejia scattered six hits on the night while allowing three runs and striking out three.
While Mejia was decent, the lack of offense from the Braves was the ultimate downfall in the seven-inning loss.
(61-66) Mississippi Braves , (80-47) Tennessee Smokies (GAME TWO — POSTPONED)
Game two for Mississippi was postponed due to weather and will be made up at a later date.
