Burkhalter lowered his season ERA to 2.71 on the year. Only one of Atlanta’s minor league affiliates came away victorious on Wednesday, but there was still plenty of action to dive into. So, let’s get into it all.
(66-68) Gwinnett Stripers 3, (71-61) Nashville Sounds 12
Luis Liberato, LF: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI, R
Harold Ramirez, RF: 1-4, 2B, RBI
Dylan Dodd, SP: 3 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 K
Box Score
Despite jumping out to a 3-0 lead on Wednesday, Gwinnett ended up being routed in a 12-3 loss to Nashville.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, the Stripers plated the first crooked number in this one in the top of the second frame. Zack Short drew a one-out walk before Luis Liberato launched a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall to make it a 2-0 Stripers lead.
Gwinnett starter Dylan Dodd would proceed to allow Nashville to score one run in the home half of the inning as the Sounds were able to cut the Stripers’ lead in half at 2-1. However, in the top of the third, Gwinnett got that run back as Harold Ramirez doubled home Drake Baldwin to make it a 3-1 Stripers lead.
Shortly after Gwinnett extended their lead, the wheels fell off the wagon. Reliever Brian Moran allowed five runs in two-thirds innings of work in the bottom of the fifth as Nashville took a 6-3 lead over Gwinnett.
The Sounds extended their lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth and four runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a commanding 12-3 lead over the Stripers. Unfortunately, Gwinnett’s offense fell flat the rest of the way, leading to the 12-3 loss to Nashville on the night.
(61-66) Mississippi Braves 0, (80-47) Tennessee Smokies 5
Cal Conley, SS: 1-4, 2B
Bryson Horne, 1B: 1-3, 2B
David Fletcher, SP: 5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Box Score
There wasn’t much that went right for Mississippi on Wednesday, as the Braves fell by a 5-0 final while tallying just four total hits on the night.
Both squads went scoreless to begin the ballgame, but Tennessee finally broke through in the top of the third inning, scoring one run off of Mississippi starter David Fletcher to take a 1-0 lead. The Smokies added to their advantage in the next inning, scoring thrice more to extend their lead to 4-0, and two innings later, Tennessee scored once again to make it a 5-0 game. All five runs scored for the Smokies came off of Fletcher.
At the plate, Mississippi didn’t fare much better on the night, as mentioned above. The lone extra-base hits for the Braves came courtesy of a pair of doubles off the bat of Cal Conley and Bryson Horne in the 5-0 loss.
(62-62) Rome Emperors 9, (60-68) Hickory Crawdads 3
Kevin Kilpatrick Jr., CF: 3-5, 2 RBI, R, BB
Stephen Paolini, DH: 3-5, 2 R, RBI
Mac Guscette C: 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI
Blake Burkhalter, SP: 7 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 5 K
Box Score
Rome got back to .500 on the season with a 9-3 victory over Hickory on Wednesday.
The Emperors wasted no time scoring in this one, plating one run in the top of the first frame as Kevin Kilpatrick Jr. singled to kick off the game and later scored on a wild pitch to make it a 1-0 game.
However, Hickory would tie the game in the home half and proceed to take the lead by scoring one run in each of the second and third innings off of Rome starter Blake Burkhalter to make it a 3-1 Crawdads lead.
After the third inning, Burkhalter settled down. Across seven frames, the righty allowed just the three runs while striking out five on the night in what was one of his longest outings of his professional career.
Trailing 3-1, Rome didn’t score again until the top of the sixth inning. E.J. Exposito and Stephen Paolini laced back-to-back singles before Patrick Clohisy singled home Exposito to cut the deficit to 3-2. Paolini proceeded to score on an Ambioris Tavarez forceout to tie the game at 3-3 prior to Tavarez scoring on a Mac Guscette double to five Rome the 4-3 lead.
The Emperors would add on to their lead in each of their next three innings. In the seventh, Jace Grady scored on a Paolini single to extend the Rome lead to 5-3 and in the eighth, Kevin Kilpatrick Jr. singled in Joe Olsavsky to make it a 6-3 lead.
Rome really broke things open in the top of the ninth, scoring three times to extend their lead to 9-3. Guscette would draw a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-3 prior to Kilpatrick Jr. drawing a walk of his own to extend the lead to 8-3. To cap off the scoring, Olsavsky would score on a wild pitch to give Rome the 9-3 lead, which would hold as the final on the night.
(46-79) Augusta GreenJackets 3, (64-60) Down East Ducks 4
Travis Dumitru, DH: 1-3, 2B, RBI, R, BB
Austin Machado, C: 1-3, RBI
Didier Fuentes, SP: 3 IP, H, 4K
Box Score
Augusta squandered an early lead on Wednesday to fall to Down East by a 4-3 final on the night.
After both squads went scoreless in their first respective at-bats, the GreenJackets jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning. Titus Dumitru and Will Verdung drew back-to-back walks to start the frame before Verdung was retired at second on a Jake Steels forceout. With runners at the corners, Dumitru scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0, and two batters later, Steels scored on an Austin Machado single into left field to extend the lead to 2-0.
The GreenJackets would tack on to their lead in the top of the third inning, as Dumitru came through with an RBI-double, plating Luis Guanipa to make it a 3-0 lead for Augusta.
Meanwhile, Augusta starter Didier Fuentes did his job well, tossing three innings of scoreless ball while allowing just one hit and striking out four in the start. Fuentes eventually gave way to reliever Juan Sanchez, who tossed three scoreless innings of his own to keep Down East at bay.
However, in the bottom of the seventh with Hayder Ortiz on the mound, the Ducks tied the game by scoring three runs — only one earned for Ortiz — to make it 3-3. After neither team scored in the final two frames, Down East scored the winning run off of Albert Rivas with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning to take the 4-3 win in extras over Augusta.
