The former post-season hero re-joined the team on a minor league deal The Atlanta Braves have brought left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek back to the organization after he was released by the San Francisco Giants, according the the team’s official transaction page. Matzek had been traded by the Braves to the Giants as part of the deal that brought outfielder Jorge Soler back to the Braves.
Matzek, who saw limited action with Atlanta earlier this season after returning from “Tommy John” surgery, did not appear with the Giants but did make several rehabilitation appearances in the minors as he recovered left elbow inflammation that caused him to hit the IL while with Atlanta.
Matzek wasn’t the only recently released reliever to join Atlanta as the team also signed former Chicago White Sox reliever John Brebbia and added him to the big league roster. Notably, both relievers were inked on August 31, allowing for a path to the post-season for both pitchers since they were both part of the organization prior to September 1.
Matzek was an effective late-inning reliever with Atlanta from 2020 through 2022 when he suffered a UCL injury late in the season. He missed all of the 2023.
Matzek had an unsightly 9.90 ERA in 11 games with Atlanta this season although he did strike out an average of one batter per inning. During his career with Atlanta, he has seen action in 143 games good for a 3.40 ERA while averaging 10.3 K/9.
It is a no-risk move for Atlanta as the team looks to hang-on to a post-season berth. He will pitch with Triple-A Gwinnett and if he is able to return to form, he could be an option later in September.
