We are treated to a top tier pitching matchup between two of the best pitchers of the last few seasons. We are treated to a top tier pitching matchup tonight, between two of the best pitchers of the last few seasons in Max Fried for the Atlanta Braves and Zack Wheeler for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Max Fried has been gradually working his way back into form after missing some time due to a nerve issue. His last two starts have looked more like the Max Fried of old, so let’s hope we see more of that against the lefty-heavy Philly lineup. His numbers on the season are dragged down a bit by his bizarrely awful first two starts of the season and his first two back from injury, but he has otherwise had a season that we have grown accustomed to from Max. Hopefully the last month and playoffs go well for him, both for our sakes as Braves fans and for his sake entering free agency.
Zack Wheeler has been more or less (maybe slightly less) like his Cy Young contender self this season, like he has been since joining Philly. He hasn’t reached quite the level of dominance of his previous three years, however, as his walks have crept up a bit (about 0.5 per 9 innings) and his velocity has declined by about half a MPH. While he may not be quite peak Wheeler, he is still absolutely a formidable challenge for Atlanta’s hitters. The lefties in the lineup will be big for Atlanta, in Michael Harris and Matt Olson, both of whom have had some luck against Wheeler in the past.
This has the looks of a low-scoring affair, but should be a fun one to watch, with such a great pitching matchup. Enjoy this treat of a rivalry game to kick off the long weekend.
