Alvarez Jr. went 3-5 with a pair of RBI on the night. There was a ton of great action on the night down on the farm, so let’s dive into it.
(62-62) Gwinnett Stripers 8, (57-65) Louisville Bats 7
Nacho Alvarez Jr., 3B: 3-5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R
Harold Ramirez, RF: 2-5, 2 RBI
Eli White, CF: 4-5, 2B, RBI, 2 R
Hurston Waldrep, SP: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Box Score
Gwinnett mounted a successful eighth-inning comeback against Louisville to come away with a Friday night victory, beating the Bats by a narrow 8-7 final.
The Stripers jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first inning to stake starter Hurston Waldrep to an early lead. Alejo Lopez ledoff with a double to begin the game before Nacho Alvarez Jr. homered over the left center field wall for a two-run homer to give Gwinnett the 2-0 lead. Gwinnett would tack on in the top of the third inning, as Eli White doubled with one out before newcomer Harold Ramirez singled him home to make it a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Waldrep tossed three scoreless frames before running into some trouble. The righty allowed two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Louisville took a 5-3 lead over the Stripers. All told, Waldrep allowed five runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out five on the night.
After being held scoreless for three straight frames, the Stripers finally broke through and retook the lead in this one in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Alvarez Jr. and White laced back-to-back singles before Ramirez came through with a single of his own, scoring Alvarez Jr. to make it a 5-4 deficit for Gwinnett. A Chadwick Tromp double scored White to tie the game at 5-5.
However, reliever Parker Dunshee allowed two runs — one earned — in the home half as Louisville took a 7-5 lead.
In the top of the eighth frame, Gwinnett would score three times to take the lead once and for all in this one. Brian Anderson ledoff with a single and Sandy Leon drew a walk to put a pair of runners on before Andrew Velazquez singled to load the bases. Anderson and J.P. Martinez — who replaced Leon on the basepath — would proceed to score on an Alvarez Jr. single to tie the game at 7-7. White then singled into right field to plate Velazquez to make it an 8-7 Stripers lead.
Ken Giles came on in the bottom of the ninth to slam the door and despite allowing one hit and a walk, the righty reliever struck out three batters to end the game and get the save and cap off the win for Gwinnett in this one.
(56-61) Mississippi Braves 0, (38-79) Chattanooga Lookouts 3
Sebastian Rivero, C: 1-3
David Fletcher, SP: 6 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 2 BB
Box Score
It was a rough go of it on both sides of the baseball for Mississippi on Friday, as the Braves were held to just one hit and one walk at the plate on the night, while the pitching staff allowed three runs in the loss.
Both squads went scoreless in the first two frames in this one before Chattanooga broke through in the top of the third inning, scoring one run off of Mississippi starter David Fletcher. In total on the night, Fletcher allowed three runs — with the other two coming in the top of the sixth — while allowing ten hits and two walks while striking out none on the night.
Meanwhile at the dish, David McCabe drew Mississippi’s lone walk on the night in the bottom of the first and catcher Sebastian Rivero tallied the Braves only hit to leadoff the bottom of the third inning as Mississippi ultimately lost this one by a 3-0 final.
(57-57) Rome Emperors 0, (57-61) Greenville Drive 2
Drew Compton, DH: 1-4,
Joe Olsavsky, 3B: 1-3, 2B
Luis Vargas, SP: 3 IP, H, 3 BB, 5 K
Box Score
Like their Double-A counterparts, Rome struggled on Friday night, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
For the first four innings in this one, neither team managed to score, as Rome starter Luis Vargas matched the opposition on the mound for three innings while allowing just one hit and walking three while striking out five on his night.
While the Rome offense was struggling to find its footing, the Drive managed to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth innings, plating one run off of Rome reliever Cory Wall to take a 1-0 lead.
Offensively, the only hits for the Emperors came on a single by Drew Compton in the top of the first inning and a Joe Olsavsky double in the home half of the top of the fifth.
Greenville scored again in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Jared Johnson to take a 2-0 lead, which would hold as the final in this one as the Drive came away with a win.
(41-73) Augusta GreenJackets 6, (70-46) Carolina Mudcats 3
Patrick Clohisy, DH: 2-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R
Will Verdung, 1B: 2-4, 2 RBI
Owen Hackman, SP: 5 IP, 2 H, BB, 5 K
Box Score
Augusta got good production at the plate and from starter Owen Hackman on Friday as the GreenJackets were victorious over Carolina by a 6-3 margin.
The GreenJackets wasted no time in this one, plating three runs in the top of the first inning to take a lead. John Gil drew a leadoff walk before a Patrick Clohisy double moved him to third. After Junior Garcia struck out, Titus Dumitru drew a walk to load the bases. Then, Will Verdng singled into left field to score Gil and Clohisy and give the GreenJackets a 2-0 lead. A Colby Jones single scored Dumitru to extend the lead to 3-0 in favor of Augusta.
The GreenJackets extended their lead in the top of the sixth frame after being held scoreless across the second and third innings. Wilmer De La Cruz drew a one-out walk and moved up to second base on a balk before John Gil drew a walk of his one to put runners at first and second base. A Clohisy double plated both De La Cruz and Gil to make it a 5-0 advantage for Augusta prior to a Junior Garcia single that scored Clohisy to make it a 6-0 game.
While Hackman didn’t allow a run in his five innings of work, the Augusta bullpen would slightly falter as Adam Shoemaker — who tossed four innings — allowed three runs as Carolina cut the GreenJackets’ lead to 6-3 on the night.
However, that would be the only offense that the Mudcats were able to accumulate on the night as Augusta came away with the win.
