Mitch Farris, Shay Schanaman, Sam Strickland and Ryan Bourassa combined for history on Wednesday. There was plenty of action on the day for Atlanta’s minor league affiliates, Rome took the cake by tossing a combined no-hitter in their win. Still, there was plenty of other action on the night, so let’s dive in.
(60-62) Gwinnett Stripers 6, (57-63) Louisville Bats 3
Drake Baldwin, DH: 2-3, RBI, BB, Sacrifice Fly
Zack Short, 2B: 2-4, RBI, R, BB
AJ Smith-Shawver, SP: 6 IP, 3 H, BB, 7 K
Box Score
Gwinnett weathered a late-inning comeback attempt by Louisville to come away with a victory on Wednesday, beating the Bats by a 6-3 final.
After both squads were held scoreless over the first two frames, the Stripers plated the first run of the game in the top of the third inning and never looked back. Eli White singled to leadoff the inning and Drake Baldwin laced a single of his own to move White over to third base. After Yuli Gurriel was hit by a pitch, Chadwick Tromp drew a bases-loaded walk to score White to make it a 1-0 game.
Meanwhile on the mound, AJ Smith-Shawver tossed an absolute gem for the Stripers. Across six innings, Smith-Shawver held Louisville scoreless while scattering just three hits, allowing one walk and striking out seven in his outing.
In the top of the sixth, Gwinnett tacked on two more runs to their lead. Zack Short and J.P. Martinez notched back-to-back singles with one out before they both attempted a double steal, allowing Short to score to make it 2-0. Then, after White drew a walk, the Stripers executed another double steal, this time scoring Martinez to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Stripers added on in the top of the seventh, scoring three times to take a 6-0 lead. Luke Waddell drew a leadoff walk before Brian Anderson was hit by a pitch and Luis Liberato drew a walk on his own to load the bases. Short drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0 and two batters later, White reached on a fielder’s choice to score Anderson to extend the lead to 5-0. A Drake Baldwin sacrifice fly plated Liberato.
Leading 6-0, Louisville cut the lead in half, scoring three times off of reliever Dylan Dodd to make it a 6-3 game. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Jimmy Herget would slam the door to seal the Gwinnett win.
(55-60) Mississippi Braves 4, (37-78) Chattanooga Lookouts 2
Geraldo Quintero, LF: 1-3, 2 RBI
Bryson Horne, 1B: 2-3, 2B, R
Jhancarlos Lara, SP: 4 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 BB, 7 K
Box Score
Mississippi doubled up the score on Chattanooga on Wednesday, getting the 4-2 win over the Lookouts.
Starter Jhancarlos Lara allowed one run in the top of the first inning as the Lookouts took a 1-0 lead. However, Lara settled down after that, going four strong innings while striking out seven and walking three.
Mississippi tied things up in the bottom of the third inning. Bryson Horne led off the frame with a double and moved up to third base on a Sebastian Rivero flyout before scoring on a Cal Conley sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
The Braves took the lead in the home half of the fourth inning. After David McCabe singled, Ethan Workinger and Cody Milligan drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. A wild pitch scored McCabe to make it a 2-1 lead for the Braves and two batters later, Geraldo Quintero singled home Workinger and Milligan to stake Mississippi to a 4-1 lead.
Lara gave way to the bullpen in the fifth inning and relievers Landon Harper and Drew Parrish took over and attempted to finish off the win. While the Lookouts would score once more in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Mississippi lead to 4-2, the Braves would seal the deal on the win.
(57-55) Rome Emperors 2, (55-61) Greenville Drive 1
Drew Compton, 1B: 1-3, 2 RBI, Sacrifice Fly
Mac Guscette, C: 1-3, R
Mitch Farris, SP: 4 IP, ER, 5 BB, 4 K
Box Score
When you only tally two hits in any given game, there’s an above-average chance you’re going to come away with a loss. However, when your pitching staff holds the opposition to zero hits, those odds shift drastically in your favor and that was exactly the case for Rome on Wednesday.
Starter Mitch Farris and relievers Shay Schanaman, Sam Strickland and Ryan Bourassa combined to toss a no-hitter against the Drive in the Emperors’ 2-1 win. Farris tossed four innings before giving way to the bullpen. While he did allow one run in the bottom of the first inning — due to issuing five walks in the frame — Farris did not allow a hit as the Drive took a 1-0 lead.
Trailing 1-0 headed into the top of the third, Rome finally jumped on the scoreboard. Joe Olsavsky and Mac Guscette drew back-to-back leadoff walks before Drew Compton scored Olsavsky home on a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-1 game.
After both teams went scoreless in the fourth frame, Rome took the lead in the top of the fifth. Guscette led off with a single and Kevin Kilpatrick Jr. was hit by a pitch to put Guscette in scoring position. Then, Compton came through again, singling into right field to make it a 2-1 lead for Rome.
As mentioned, relievers Schanaman, Strickland and Bourassa came through, continuing Farris’ hitless start. Across five combined innings, the three relievers walked just one batter while striking out four to finish off the win and seal the deal on a bit of history for the Rome club.
(40-72) Augusta GreenJackets, 4, (69-45) Carolina Mudcats 9
John Gil, SS: 2-4, R
Junior Garcia, LF: 2-4, RBI, BB
Luis Arestigueta, SP: 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
Box Score
Augusta came up short against Carolina on Wednesday, losing by five runs to the Mudcats.
Starter Luis Arestigueta allowed one run in the bottom of the first inning and two runs in the bottom of the second as Carolina took a 3-0 lead over Augusta. However, the GreenJackets tied things up in the top of the third frame.
Austin Machado led off with a single before Luis Guanipa subsequently drew a walk to move him into scoring position, but was replaced by Titus Dumitru as a pinch-runner after he appeared to suffer a minor injury during his at-bat. After John Gil drew a walk to load the bases, Junior Garcia drew a free pass of his own to score Machado to make it a 3-1 game. Dumitru scored on a Patrick Clohisy groundout to make it 3-2 before Gil crossed the dish to on an Isaiah Drake sacrifice fly to tie the game.
While Augusta took their first and only lead in the top of the fifth as Will Verdung singled home Clohisy to make it a 4-3 lead, the GreenJackets would squander the one-run advantage. In the home half of the fifth, Carolina tied the game at 4-4, but would go on to score five runs in the next frame to take a commanding 9-4 lead which would hold on as the final as the GreenJackets were unable to mount any type of offensive comeback the rest of the way.
