The legendary manager went down in defeat, with the Braves being the team to hand him his final loss.
Braves franchise history
1927: Braves outfielder Eddie Brown surpasses Fred Luderus’s modern National League mark of 533 consecutive games played from 1916 through 1919. Steve Brodie played 574 consecutive games from 1893 through 1897
1948: The Brooklyn Dodgers nab eight bases, which includes a 5th-inning triple steal with Jackie Robinson. However, the Braves have the last laugh in a 4-3 win that moves them two games in front of the second-place Dodgers. No Dodger baserunner had been thrown out in their last 19 steal attempts against the Braves,
2000: The Phillies top the Reds 5-4, despite Cincinnati's Alex Ochoa hitting a grand slam. The grand salami from Ochoa is the 142nd grand slam of the season, which sets a new major league record. The Oakland Athletics have hit 11 in 2000, which was one shy of the record shared by the 1997 Atlanta Braves and the 1999 Cleveland Indians.
2000: Rockies catcher Brent Mayne became the first position player to be a winning pitcher since 1968 as he pitched a scoreless 12th inning in a 7-6 win over the Braves. Mayne was the ninth pitcher to take the mound for the Rockies in that game, which tied a modern-day record. Back in 1968, Yankees outfielder Rocky Colavito hit a homer and then proceeded to throw 2.2 shutout innings against his former team in Detroit as he helped the Bronx Bombers beat the Tigers.
2010: Lou Piniella calls it quits after 23 seasons as a big league manager. His final game goes down as a loss as the Braves beat the Cubs 16-5 at Wrigley Field. Piniella missed games earlier in the season to be with his ill mother and had previously announced that this season would be his last. Cubs coach Mike Quade takes over as interim manager for the remainder of the season and Lou Piniella retires with a lifetime career record of 1,835 wins to 1,712 losses.
MLB History
1965: Juan Marichal thought Johnny Roseboro threw one a bit too close to his head while throwing the ball to Sandy Koufax on the mound. Marichal proceeds to whack the Dodgers catcher with his bat and this touches off a 14-minute brawl where Roseboro suffers cuts on his head.
1966: Frank Robinson falls into a swimming pool at a private party and nearly drowns. Fortunately, Andy Etchebarren dives in and saves his teammate, ensuring that the future Hall-of Famer goes on to play until 1976 and manage until 2006.
1979: Reds catcher Johnny Bench belts his 325th homer in a win over the Expos, which the most ever hit by a player in a Reds uniform. The old franchise record of 324 was held by none other than Frank Robinson.
1980: Bill Veeck admits that he can no longer compete in this particular economy and agrees to sell the Chicago White Sox to Eddie DeBartolo, Sr. for a reported $20 million. The sale ends up falling through after American League owners twice fail to give Veeck the ten votes needed for approval. The reticence comes from wariness towards DeBartolo’s strong links to horse racing and legal gambling.
1982: Mr. Cub Ernie Banks becomes the first player in Chicago Cubs history to have his uniform number. The number 14 is never worn again by any other Cubs player.
2003: For the fourth season in a row, Garret Anderson reaches the 100-RBI mark and becomes the first player in Angels franchise history to do so. The Angels OF was also the first in franchise history to do it over three straight seasons.
2007: The Rangers demolish the Orioles 30-3, to set an American League record for runs scored in a single game. The pain did not stop for Baltimore, as the Rangers then proceeded to score nine more runs in the nightcap to set the AL record for runs in a doubleheader — breaking the previous mark of 36 runs scored over a doubleheader by the 1937 Tigers. The 1950 Red Sox and 1955 White Sox had previously held the single-game AL record of 29.
No other team in big league history had scored 30 in a single game since the Chicago Colts pulled it off way back in 1897. Travis Metcalf came from the minors and drove in eight runs over the course of the two games. In the first contest, Metcalf and Marlon Byrd both homered. David Murphy went 5-for-7 with five runs. Eight-spot hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia and nine-hole hitter Ramon Vazquez both homered twice and drove in seven runs. Every Rangers hitter scored at least once, with Murphy and Saltalamacchia both touching home plate five times. Vazquez scored the 30th run with a three-run 9th-inning dinger off of Paul Shuey.
2021: Miguel Cabrera becomes the 28th player to join the 500 Home Run Club, as the Tigers legend hits a solo homer off of Blue Jays hurler Steven Matz.
