Waldrep struck out five in his five innings of work. Mother Nature may have interfered in a few minor league games on Friday. But there was still plenty of action to dive into, including five hitless innings on the mound from a top Braves prospect.
(57-61) Gwinnett Stripers 7, (55-63) Norfolk Tide 0
Chadwick Tromp, DH: 3-3, 3 RBI, R, BB
Eli White, LF: 2-4, 2B, RBI
Zack Short, SS: 2-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R
Hurston Waldrep, SP: 5 IP, 6 BB, 5 K
Box Score
While Mother Nature might have cut this one short, that didn’t stop the Stripers from showing up and showing out behind a stellar performance on the mound by Hurston Waldrep.
Waldrep wasted no time getting going, tossing two scoreless frames before the Stripers finally jumped on the scoreboard. All told, Waldrep would spin five hitless innings on the night. And while he walked six batters, he managed to hold Norfolk scoreless while striking out five batters in his outing.
Gwinnett provided Waldrep with some early run support, plating two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Andrew Velazquez ledoff the frame with a single before stealing second base. After J.P. Martinez walked — followed by both he and Velazquez stealing second and third — Justin Dean walked to load the bases. Zack Short proceeded to single to score Velazquez to make it a 1-0 game before Alejo Lopez grounded out to plate Martinez to extend the lead to 2-0. Chadwick Tromp would cap off the inning with a two-run single, as Dean and Short would score to make it 4-0.
The Stripers would tack on an additional run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Brian Anderson scored on a Dean sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the sixth — which would be the final at-bat for either squad — Tromp singled home Short to make it 6-0 before an Eli White double scored Tromp to extend the lead to 7-0 before rain forced the game to be called, resulting in a Gwinnett win.
(52-59) Mississippi Braves 2, (55-54) Biloxi Shuckers 0
Cody Milligan, CF: 2-4, 2 2B, RBI, R
Cal Conley, SS: 2-4
Drue Hackenberg, SP: 6 IP, 3 H, BB, 6 K
Box Score
Mississippi only managed two runs on Friday, but it was more than enough to beat Biloxi as the Braves pitching staff held the Shuckers scoreless on the night.
Starter Drue Hackenberg did his duty with great gusto, tossing six scoreless frames. Across those innings, Hackenberg allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six batters in his outing.
After being shutout through their first four times at the plate, Mississippi finally broke through in the run column in the top of the fifth inning. After KeShawn Ogans struckout, Brandon Parker and Cody Milligan laced back-to-back doubled to make it 1-0 Braves. After a Cal Conley single moved Milligan up to third, the latter would score on a balk to extend the Mississippi lead to 2-0 on the night.
Meanwhile, the Braves pitching staff continued Hackenberg’s dominance once he exited the game. Across the final three innings, Jake McSteen, Rolddy Munoz and Elison Joseph tossed one scoreless inning each to preserve the win for Mississippi.
(53-54) Rome Emperors 0, (46-63) Asheville Tourists 0 (SUSPENDED IN TOP 2ND)
Mitch Farris, SP: 1 IP, H, BB, 2 K
Rain got in the way of this one making it out of the second inning, so the game will be finished on Saturday, Aug. 17. Naturally, there weren’t many highlights in a game this short, but Rome starter Mitch Farris did strike out two batters in his lone inning of work.
(39-69) Augusta GreenJackets 1, (49-61) Fayetteville Woodpeckers 6
Mason Guerra, 3B: 1-3, 2B
Wilmer De La Cruz, 2B: 1-4, RBI
Owen Hackman, SP: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 2 K
Box Score
Augusta fell by a 6-1 final on Friday, losing to Fayetteville to move to 2-2 in the current series with the Woodpeckers.
Despite the outcome, the GreenJackets actually scored first in this one. Titus Dumitru drew a one-out walk before a Will Verdung single advanced him to third. After Mason Guerra struckout, Wilmer De La Cruz singled into right field to give Augusta the 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile on the mound, starter Owen Hackman made the first professional start of his career on Friday. Across four innings, the 9th-rounder scattered four hits while allowing two runs and striking out two on the night.
At the plate, things were fairly dismal for Augusta after the second inning. For the rest of the game, the GreenJackets were held to just three hits — five total on the night — while Fayetteville took their first lead of the game in top of the third at 2-1.
The Woodpeckers would outscore the GreenJackets 6-1 in this one as the Augusta offense was unable to come up with any more offense in the loss.
(15-35) DSL Braves 4, (40-14) DSL Red Sox 5
Juan Mateo, SS: 1-5, HR, RBI, R
Juan Espinal, DH: 2-4, 2B, R, BB
Joan Acevedo, 3B: 1-4, 2B, RBI
Yander Pinero, SP: 4 IP, 3 H, BB, 4 K
Box Score
The DSL Braves fell victim to a walkoff win for the DSL Red Sox on Friday, losing by a 5-4 final.
To leadoff the game, Juan Espinal doubled into center field before advancing to third on a Michael Martinez groundout to third base. Then, as Michael Baez reached on an error, Espinal came around to score to stake the Braves to a 1-0 lead.
The Braves would add on in the top of the third, as shortstop Juan Mateo launched his first homer of the year over the right field wall to extend the lead to 2-0. In the following frame, Isaac Osorio singled with one out before an Alexander Sanchez double brought him across to score to make it a 3-0 game.
Michael Martinez ledoff the top of the fifth with a single and moved up to second on another single by Gabriel Cesa. Joan Acevedo doubled into right field to plate Martinez as the Braves took a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, starter Yander Pinero turned in his best performance of the season. The 17-year-old tossed four innings of three-hit ball while only walking one and striking out four on the day.
However, the Braves bullpen squandered the four-run lead, as the Red Sox would plate five unanswered runs over the final five innings to take a 5-4 lead which would hold on as the final.
