Schwellenbach has emerged as a key piece of Atlanta’s rotation. The Atlanta Braves will make the final stop on their three-city road trip Friday night when they begin a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels. The trip began in disappointing fashion for the Braves as they dropped two of three to the last place Colorado Rockies. They were able to bounce back though by taking three of four from a Giants team that had surged back into Wild Card contention.
The Angels come into the series riding a three-game losing streak. They are 52-69 for the season which is just a half game better than the Oakland Athletics for last place in the AL West. The Angels are not a good team, but neither are the Rockies. Atlanta has a 6-8 record in August and are just 45-48 since May 1. They are not in position where they can take any opponent lightly. With a huge series coming up against the Philadelphia Phillies back in Atlanta Tuesday, the Braves must focus and end their road trip by taking care of business this weekend.
Spencer Schwellenbach will get the start for the Braves in Friday’s opener and will be looking to continue a good run of starts. He allowed two runs and struck out seven in his last start against the Rockies. Since the start of July, Schwellenbach has been one of Atlanta’s most consistent options with a 2.54 ERA and a 2.77 FIP spanning six starts.
The Angels will counter with right-hander Jose Soriano who is in a good stretch of his own. Soriano allowed one run and struck out seven in six innings in his last start against the Nationals. He has a 3.13 ERA and a 3.61 FIP since returning from the injured list on July 12.
The Braves got centerfielder Michael Harris back from the injured list Wednesday but then saw another key contributor go down. Jorge Soler was diagnosed with a mild hamstring strain that he suffered while running out a ground ball in San Francisco. He isn’t expected to play on Friday but is hoping to return sometime this weekend.
First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 9:38 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
