Max Fried looks to get back on track against the Giants | Mady Mertens-USA TODAY Sports
Max Fried looks to get back on track, and Michael Harris has had massive success against Logan Webb in the past. The Atlanta Braves are taking on the San Francisco Giants in the final game of a four game series, and it is refreshing to say that they are looking to complete a four game sweep.
After struggling mightily offensively recently, the Braves have stepped it up in that department, outscoring the Giants 18-5 so far in this series. Michael Harris has already been a breath of fresh air with his grand slam in his first game back, and should be a massive upgrade defensively as well for a Braves outfield that ranks in the bottom tier in that category regardless of your preferred defensive metric.
Today may not be a day with much offense to speak of from either team as it will be a matchup of two former Cy Young vote getters in Max Fried and Logan Webb.
Fried has struggled since coming back from injury. In four starts he has pitched 20.1 innings to a 6.64 ERA, 5.10 FIP, and hitters have slashed .310/.400/.471 against him. To be fair, they have also had some luck with a .404 BABIP, but it is still something to keep an eye on this afternoon. Fried struggled in his first four starts of the season after coming back from an injury but then performed well down the stretch, so he may just be shaking off the rust.
Since the start of July, Webb has also struggled a bit by his standards. In 44.2 innings, hitters have slashed .260/.314/.358. It is a good slash line, but is a drop off from his typical performance.
Nine players on the Giants have faced Fried before, but most of them have struggled in limited action. Only one player of the nine have an OPS over .533 against him. Mark Canha is the player to keep an eye on. In sixteen at-bats he owns a .313 average and 1.171 OPS with two HRs. On the other side of the coin, the player that has seen Fried the most is Michael Conforto with twenty-one at-bats. He owns a .095 average (that is not a typo), and .333 OPS.
For the Braves, every single offensive player on the roster other than Luke Williams have faced Webb before. For the most part, the Braves have done decent against him. Orlando Arcia has struggled to a .000 OPS in eight at-bats, and Laureano has a .167 OPS in five at-bats. Other than that, every other player has an OPS north of .542. Michael Harris, Matt Olson, and Jarred Kelenic have all excelled against Webb in limited fashion. In eight at-bats, Harris has an OPS of 1.875, Olson has an OPS of .907 in nineteen at-bats, and Kelenic has an OPS of .833 in six at-bats.
Of all the players, Olson and Riley have seen Webb the most with nineteen at-bats a piece. Riley has .316 average and .668 OPS against Webb. A .668 OPS is not normally a level to boast about, but against Webb, it is very good.
If Max Fried can knock off the rust and pitch like he did prior to his injury, and if the Braves can hit Webb like they have in the past, there is a good shot that the team could be headed to their series with the Angels having just swept a four game series.
First pitch is at 3:45 ET.
