Back to back nights d’Arnaud has driven in the game-winning run in extras. Another nail-biter in San Francisco went Atlanta’s way for the second night in a row, with the Braves pulling out a 4-3 victory in 10 innings.
There was early offense for both sides, a night after neither team scored in regulation. The Braves struck first as Ramon Laureano hit a solo homer just over the right field wall to make it 1-0, and Jorge Soler continued his crazy week with a double in the gap to score Whit Merrifield and make it 2-0.
San Francisco would strike for a run in the bottom half to cut the lead in half. Travis d’Arnaud then crushed a ball down the line to give Atlanta a 3-1 lead, although Morton would give it right back a few moments later with a solo homer to Tyler Fitzgerald.
And that was all the offense until the 8th inning. The Giants had two on and no outs on a double and Austin Riley error, but Pierce Johnson induced a 4-6-3 double play to put a runner on third with two down. He was a strike away, but an overcooked curveball bounced nowhere near the plate and got away from d’Arnaud to allow the tying run to score at 3-3. It’s never easy.
In the bottom of the 9th, Dylan Lee worked a 1-2-3 frame on six pitches. He was helped out in a big way with this brilliant catch in center field by Eli White. It likely would have been a triple if White doesn’t come down with it.

The game went to the 10th for the second night in a row. And once again, it was Travis d’Arnaud driving in the game-winning run with the softest of inside-out singles that snuck past the second baseman to make it 4-3.

In the bottom of the 10th, Raisel Iglesias took the ball and was fantastic for the second night in a row. There was a bizarre bunt attempt where the Braves appeared to throw the ghost runner out at third base, but the home plate umpire ruled batter’s interference and sent the runner back to second in exchange for an out. It wasn’t exactly ideal. Iglesias settled in, however, and got fly outs to center and left to close out the 4-3 victory.
Exhale.
A really cool moment happened in the bottom of the sixth inning as Morton struck out Mike Yastrzemski on a curveball to record the 2,000th strikeout of his career. He becomes just the 89th pitcher in big league history to hit the 2K mark.

The club also put together this video montage commemorating the accomplishment:

Morton pitched well overall, working six innings of two-run ball. He struck out eight and scattered six hits and a walk. After a disastrous start against Milwaukee, it was good to see Chuck bounce back with a strong start.
Jesse Chavez struck out two in the seventh before giving way to Pierce Johnson in the 8th.
The series continues Wednesday night with Grant Holmes scheduled to make another start. He’ll be opposed by another lefty in Robbie Ray, who has pitched well for the most part since returning from Tommy John Surgery last month. First pitch is 9:45 p.m. ET.
