The offense picked up the slack from a mixed outing from Fried and some bullpen struggles in a classic Coors game victory. The Braves came into this game on quite a skid and were hoping that Max Fried could bounce back himself in his second start coming back from a nerve injury to help the team get off the mat.
The first inning was not encouraging, as Soler reached to lead off the game, but was immediately erased by an Austin Riley ground ball double-play. Max Fried found himself in a jam on two lucky singles and a walk with one out to load the bases with one out, but battled back with two strikeouts to hold the game at 0-0. The second inning looked very similar, as a leadoff walk by Olson was erased by a double-play. Fried allowed another two singles, one well-hit and one very much not, but allowed a homer to old friend Sam Hilliard to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead in the second.
A Ramon Laureano infield single, a Whit Merrifield walk, and a Soler walk loaded the bases for Atlanta with one out in the third, giving them some life. Austin Riley worked a nice walk to bring a run home, taking advantage of Hudson’s control issues. Marcell Ozuna nearly hit a grand slam, but it went foul and he ended up striking out, but Matt Olson followed him up with a grand slam that stayed fair and was crushed.

In true 2024 Braves’ fashion, however, that was not where they took control of the game, as Max Fried walked another two batters in the bottom of the inning and a massive miscommunication between four Braves defenders on a .020 xBA ball in no-mans land brought two runs home to tie the game at 5 runs. After a fourth inning filled with groundouts, but no baserunners, Marcell’s 35th homer of the season in the fifth broke the tie, coming as a one out solo shot.

Meanwhile, Ramon Laureano was removed from the game with right heel soreness, after hitting first base awkwardly on his infield single. Fried completed his outing in the fifth, with two groundouts and a strikeout. Similarly to his first start coming back from his throwing arm nerve issue, Fried had strong strikeout numbers, but struggled with command. He pitched 5.0 innings, with 3 walks and 9 strikeouts, with the Hilliard homer as his primary blemish.
The Braves picked up another two runs in the top of the sixth, as a Sean Murphy walk and some bad outfield defense on a Merrifield fly ball came home for runs on a Soler single. Those runs were important, because Aaron Bummer got the home sixth and allowed a single, two doubles, and a single to give the lead away, tying the game at 8. Pierce Johnson came in and held the Rockies there to send the game to the seventh.
Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson came through again for Atlanta in the seventh, as Marcell just missed a homer for a double off the wall, and Matt Olson pulled a two-run homer to right field for a 10-8 lead.

Pierce Johnson allowed some decent contact in the home seventh, but ultimately only allowed one single on his way to a scoreless frame. Jorge Soler chipped in with a two out opposite field wall-scraper of a solo homer in the eighth to give the Braves an insurance run that felt like it might be needed, given how the game had gone.
Joe Jimenez and Raisel Iglesias flipped the script, however, working easy 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively, to close the game out.
