The vibes are exceedingly bad right now for Atlanta so they will hope that their staple top of the rotation starter can step up to the moment. Well, things are pretty miserable right now for the Braves, who are five games above .500. They have lost six games straight, are on the outside of the playoff picture, are missing a bunch of great players to injury, and don’t seem to have a particularly strong sense of urgency organizationally to turn things around for this season. They are clearly focused on the long-view and certainly trying not tanking the season, but also aren’t exactly pulling all the levers to make the playoffs this year.
Max Fried is making is second start coming back from a nerve issue in his throwing arm. His first start back from injury did not go particularly well, with 3.1 innings of 5 run ball with 5 walks, but a strong 6 strikeouts. Fried has been largely great this season since his brutal first two starts of the season and now this most recent start back from injury. Hopefully he doesn’t need a second start to get up to form this time around. The thing to keep an eye on will be his command on Saturday, as his two worst starts of the season have featured tons of walks. Savant says he has been getting fairly lucky with his batted ball outcomes this season, but he is having a strong year with the outlier starts aside in what is likely his walk year.
The Rockies have not yet announced a starter for today, but the Rockies don’t have anyone particularly impressive as an option regardless, so it shouldn’t make a tremendous difference. The Braves are big favorites in this game on paper, even away from home, with the clearly better team and Max Fried on the mound. Coors is weird and things have been going badly lately, but Atlanta needs to get the job done here and string together some wins if they want to be in the playoffs.
