Fuentes only lasted 2.2 innings for Augusta. There was plenty of action on Friday in the Atlanta Braves system, so let’s go ahead and get into it all.
(53-59) Gwinnett Stripers 9, (55-57) Memphis Redbirds 3
Yuli Gurriel, 1B: 2-5, HR, 4 RBI, R
Andrew Velazquez, SS: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R
Ian Anderson, SP: 6.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Box Score
Behind Ian Anderson’s performance, Gwinnett bested Memphis by a 9-3 final on Friday.
Across 6.2 innings, Anderson scattered four hits while allowing three walks and striking out four batters on the night. The Stripers provided Anderson with some early run support in the top of the second inning.
Alejo Lopez and Brian Anderson drew back-to-back walks to start off the frame and two batters later, Justin Dean laced a two-out, infield single to score Lopez and make it a 1-0 Stripers lead. While Memphis got that run back to tie the game in the home half of the inning, Gwinnett soon ran away with things.
In the top of the third, Nacho Alvarez Jr. reached on an error before Drake Baldwin drew a walk to move him into scoring position. Then, Yuli Gurriel singled into left field to plate Alvarez Jr. to make it a 2-1 game.
Gwinnett would pile it on in the top of the fourth frame. Andrew Velazquez ledoff with a single before stealing second base as a Dean single advanced him to third base. Two batters later, Alvarez Jr. singled into center field to score Velazquez and make it a 3-1 lead. Drake Baldwin would single home Dean to make it 4-1 before Yuli Gurriel homered over the left field wall to extend the lead to 7-1 for Gwinnett.
In the top of the fifth inning, J.P. Martinez ledoff with a walk before Andrew Velazquez launched his 15th homer of the year to extend the Stripers’ lead to 9-1 on the night.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Gwinnett reliever Drew Parrish allowed two runs as the Redbirds cut the Stripers lead to 9-3. That would hold on to be the final as the Stripers came away with the victory.
(48-57) Mississippi Braves 1, (59-45) Pensacola Blue Wahoos 2
David McCabe, DH: 1-4, HR, RBI, R
Yolbert Sanchez, 3B: 2-3
Drue Hackenberg, SP: 6 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Box Score
Mississippi came up short on Friday, losing by a 2-1 final to Pensacola.
The Blue Wahoos struck first in this one, scoring one run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Starter Drue Hackenberg allowed the lone run, while striking out six batters across six innings and walking a pair.
Offensively, the Braves tallied just three hits through the first six innings of this one. After the Blue Wahoos extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning — by scoring one additional run to make it 2-0 — the Braves finally crossed the plate in the home half.
Mississippi wasted no time in the home half, as David McCabe launched a leadoff homer to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. However, the Braves only placed one runner on base in the final two frames as Mississippi ultimately lost on the night.
(49-52) Rome Emperors 0, (61-43) Greensboro Grasshoppers 6
Jace Grady, RF: 2-4
Adam Zebrowski, C: 1-4, 2B
Blake Burkhalter, SP: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 5 K
Box Score
There weren’t too many things that went well for Rome on Friday as the Emperors lost by a 6-0 final while tallying just five hits on the night.
Starter Blake Burkhalter went 4.2 innings on the night and while he scattered just four hits and allowed only three runs, his downfall would ultimately be the five walks he issued. In the bottom of the fourth, Greensboro scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead but would also tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-0.
At the plate, Rome struggled mightily on Friday. As mentioned above, the Emperors tallied just five hits as Rome only put two runners in scoring position the entire night — without having any runners reach third base at all on the night.
(37-63) Augusta GreenJackets 2, (47-53) Charleston RiverDogs 1
(GAME ONE)
Colby Jones, 2-3, 2B
Luis Guanipa, CF: 1-3, R, BB
Will Verdung, 1B: 1-4, RBI
Didier Fuentes, SP: 2.2 IP, 2 BB, 3 K
Box Score
Augusta needed all nine innings in game one of their doubleheader on Friday to get the win, but the GreenJackets made it happen, winning by just one run over Charleston.
In the top of the first, Augusta jumped out to an early lead. Luis Guanipa singled to leadoff the game before John Gil reached on a fielder’s choice which allowed Guanipa to advance to third. After Junior Garcia walked to load the bases, Patrick Clohisy grounded out to plate Guanipa to make it a 1-0 game.
Charleston managed to tie the game in the bottom of the third, scoring one run off of starter Didier Fuentes to make it a 1-1 game. Fuentes only lasted 2.2 innings, but managed to strike out three while walking just two batters. However, Fuentes left the start early, but it appeared to be a minor issue.
Things quieted down after that, at least until the top of the ninth inning where the game was in extra innings. With John Gil starting the frame out on second base, Will Verdung singled into center field to give the GreenJackets a 2-1 lead. In the home half, Reibyn Corona tossed a scoreless frame to get the save in game one.

Trailing 1-0, Augusta finally knotted things up in the top of the fourth frame and ultimately took their first lead of the game. John Gil ledoff with a single and two batters later, Isaiah Drake walked to move Gil into scoring position. Will Verdung proceeded to reach on an error to score both Gil and Drake to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the GreenJackets.
However, Charleston scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead which would hold as the final as Augusta failed to score the rest of the way as they split with the RiverDogs on the day.
(14-30) DSL Braves 3, (31-15) DSL Cleveland Goryl 14
Juan Mateo, SS: 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI

Despite the loss, the Braves actually jumped on the board first after both teams were held scoreless in their first at-bats. In the bottom of the second inning, Gabriel Cesa laced a one-out double before Joan Acevedo brought him home on a single to make it a 1-0 Braves lead.
Shortly after the Braves took their lead, the wheels essentially fell off the wagon. Cleveland scored four runs in the top of the fourth, one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings and a whopping six runs in the top of the seventh to take a commanding 12-1 lead. Starter Edward Cedano allowed four of those runs — three of which were earned.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Braves got two of those runs back. Isaac Osorio notched a one-out single and Alexander Sanchez followed that up with a single of his own to move Osorio up to third. Then, a Juan Mateo double into left field plated both runners, making it a 12-3 game.
However, the DSL Cleveland squad scored twice more in the next half inning to extend their lead to 14-3 over the Braves, which would hold on as the final.
