Six losses in a row and 13 of 19 since the midway point. The Braves continue to find new lows, falling to the Rockies on Friday night, 6-5. It was their sixth loss in a row and drops the team to 6-13 since the All Star Break.
Rockies starter Tanner Gordon came into the game with an ERA and FIP upwards of six, but the Braves couldn’t do much against him. I am as shocked as you. Marcell Ozuna hit a solo homer — because no one gets on base on this team — in the first for an early 1-0 lead, but it was shortly lived as Colorado took the lead a few innings later. Atlanta scratched across another run in the fifth against Gordon to make it 5-2, but Riley and Ozuna popped out and struck out, respectively, with runners on the corners to end the inning.
Grant Holmes got knocked around in the third and fourth innings, surrendering three in the third and two in the fourth. He managed to strike out eight and induced 21 whiffs, tying the most of any Braves starter this season (per CJ Nitkowski in the booth), but the Rockies eventually started torching his mistakes in the zone. It may be time to return Holmes to the bullpen and try a different option every fifth (or sixth) day as the Braves continue to manage the rotation like there’s a 10 game division lead.
The Braves found some life in the seventh as Ramon Laureano hit a solo homer to make it 5-3. Jorge Soler then hit his first home run with Atlanta since the trade to tie things at 5-5. It was a brief moment of happiness.

The tie lasted roughly seven minutes as AJ Minter promptly surrendered back to back doubles to give Colorado the lead right back. Despite being good most of the season, the bullpen has been atrocious lately.
In the ninth, down 6-5, Jarred Kelenic led off with a single. Whit Merrifield bunted Kelenic to second and Soler chopped one to the second baseman to advance Kelenic to third with two outs. Austin Riley struck out swinging to end it.
The series continues Saturday night with Max Fried attempting to bounce back in his second start since returning from the IL. He’ll be opposed by TBD, who will likely throw 7 scoreless. First pitch at 8:10 p.m. ET.
