Nacho Alvarez and Drake Baldwin again led the Gwinnett offense, while a number of 2024 draftees saw their first pro action on Sunday. Sunday was a rough day down on the farm for the Braves as the minor league teams each took a loss and two of the four were shut out for the day. On a positive note it was the start of seeing some of the 2024 MLB Draft picks making their professional debuts for Augusta, while AJ Smith-Shawver had a solid start and both Nacho Alvarez and Drake Baldwin had strong performances.

Statcast
Nacho Alvarez Jr. SS: 1-2, 3 BB, R, .325/.437/.556
Drake Baldwin, C: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI, .287/.411/.476
AJ Smith-Shawver, SP: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 5.40 ERA
AJ Smith-Shawver got the start and pitched very well through four and a third innings. AJSS allowed two runs on four hits and a pair of walks, striking out six and recording 11 swings and misses - but that doesn’t tell the whole story. He allowed a two-run homer in the second but kept Nashville off the scoreboard in every other inning, though he didn’t have his best command and seemed to be working deeper in counts often. Jackson Stephens followed and allowed an additional run to score during his inning and two thirds, then Jimmy Herget gave up a run in his inning, and Daysbel Hernandez allowed two runs (one earned) over his inning, before a clean inning from Ken Giles to finish the game off on the pitching side.
No surprise but the Gwinnett offense was led by the duo of Nacho Alvarez and Drake Baldwin again. Baldwin was two for five with a double, scoring once and also batting in a run, while Nacho reached base four times as he went one for two with three walks and a run scored. Yuli Gurriel picked up a double and batted in a pair of runs, while JP Martinez joined Baldwin in having a multi-hit game, going two for five with a run scored.

Box Score
Yolbert Sanchez, 3B: 2-4, R, .265/.285/.336
Ian Mejia, SP: 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K, 3.12 ERA
Landon Harper, RP: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 0.95 ERA
Ian Mejia made the start and lasted four innings, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Jake McSteen followed and allowed three runs over two hits, then Patrick Halligan allowed a run in his inning of work before Austin Smith and Landon Harper each came through with a scoreless inning of relief.
Offensively the positive was that eight out of the nine hitters in the Mississippi lineup had base hits, though each of them was a single and only one of those eight hitters had a multi-hit game. Yolbert Sanchez was the lone player with multiple hits, going two for four with a run scored, while Bryson Worrell also reached base twice by going one for three with a walk.

Box Score
Adam Zebrowski, C: 2-3, .229/.312/.375
Luis Vargas, SP: 5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 3.33 ERA
Samuel Strickland, RP: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1.95 ERA
The first game of a doubleheader had Luis Vargas go, and he was very hittable in this one. Vargas went five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and a pair of walks, striking out two. Isaac Gallegos followed with a scoreless inning that included a pair of strikeouts, then Samuel Strickland went on to allow just one unearned run over two innings with three strikeouts. Finally Rob Griswold threw a scoreless frame to complete the day, as the second game ended up getting postponed.
The Rome offense never got going, getting shut out on just four hits and two walks. Adam Zebrowski went two for three, with Jace Grady and Carlos Arroyo also picking up singles in the loss. Kevin Kilpatrick Jr. and Tim Borden each drew walks to account for all of the Rome baserunners on the day.

Luis Guanipa, CF: 2-4, SB, .170/.200/.189
Patrick Clohisy, LF: 2-4, SB, .500/.500/.500
David Rodriguez, SP: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 7.88 ERA
David Rodriguez started and went five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Adel Dilone followed and allowed one run over two and a third innings before Juan Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning and two thirds.
However the big story in this game is the debut of a number of draftees from this year’s class and one of the top undrafted free agents. Patrick Clohisy, the Braves top pick from Day 3 of the draft, went two for four with a stolen base in his professional debut while hitting from third in the order. Hitting cleanup was Day 3 pick Titus Dumitru, who singled in four at bats and also stole a base, while Colby Jones went one for three hitting ninth. A fourth pick, Mason Guerra, was hitless in four at bats, as was undrafted free agent and former Alabama catcher Mac Guscette, though he was 0-2 with a walk. Among the other prospects Luis Guanipa joined Clohisy in going two for four with a steal and John Gil was 0-4.
