Spencer Schwellenbach leads the Braves into action Friday night against the Miami Marlins. After winning five of their last six games, the Atlanta Braves will look to keep it going Friday night when they continue a four-game series against the Miami Marlins. Atlanta took the opener of the series Thursday night, winning 4-2 behind a good outing from Charlie Morton along with homers by Austin Riley, Matt Olson and Orlando Arcia.
Spencer Schwellenbach will make his 11th start of the season and will be looking to continue his good work. Like most rookie pitchers, Schwellenbach has had his ups and downs in his first season in the majors. He seemed to settle in during July though posting a 2.08 ERA and a 2.62 FIP across four starts and 26 innings. He’s coming off the best start of his career where he recorded a career-best 11 strikeouts across seven scoreless innings against the Mets.
The Marlins are still juggling their roster in wake of a huge sell off at the trade deadline. They plan to promote rookie right-hander Valente Bellozo to start Friday’s game. He made two spot starts for Miami earlier in the season and has allowed five runs and struck out 10 in 10 innings combined across his two starts. Bellozo has spent the majority of the season between Double-A and Triple-A. He has a 4.67 ERA and a 5.88 FIP in eight appearances for Jacksonville.
The Braves’ offense continued its recent surge in Thursday’s win. Atlanta homered three more times in Thursday’s win and now has 21 home runs over its past seven games. After ranking in the middle of the pack for most of the season, the Braves are up to sixth in the majors with 136 homers.
Matt Olson has played a huge part in that with five homers in his last six games. Austin Riley hit his 15th homer of the season in Thursday’s win and is hitting .284/.347/.541 with a 144 wRC+ since June 1. Orlando Arcia hit his 10th home run of the season Thursday night and extended his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games.
Friday’s game is scheduled to get underway at 7:20 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
