Baldwin has a .903 OPS over 34 games with the Stripers. All-in-all it was a lackluster day down on the farm for Atlanta’s minor league squads, as Gwinnett was the lone team to come away with a victory on Wednesday. So, let’s dive into the action.
(49-55) Gwinnett Stripers 6, (54-49) Nashville Sounds 3
Drake Baldwin, DH: 1-3, HR, 2 RBI
Chadwick Tromp, C: 2-3, HR, 2 RBI, R
Luke Waddell, SS: 2-4, 2B, R
Dylan Dodd, SP: 4 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, BB, 3 K
Box Score
Gwinnettt got a pair of homers from Drake Baldwin and Chadwick Tromp to lead the Stripers to victory over Nashville by a 6-3 final on Wednesday.
Gwinnett jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. J.P. Martinez doubled to leadoff the inning before Eli White singled him to third base. Drake Baldwin proceeded to bring Martinez home on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Then, 2 batters later, Chadwick Tromp plated White on another sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.
Nashville tied the game in the top of the 2nd, and later took the lead in the top of the 4th inning, leading the Stripers by a 3-2 lead.
After the first inning, the Stipers were held scoreless until the bottom of the 6th frame. Tromp launched a one-out homer to tie the game at 3-3 as Brian Anderson followed that up with a single. After Luke Waddell doubled him to third, Alejo Lopez singled into left field to plate both runners to stake Gwinnett to a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Baldwin launched a solo homer of his own to make it a 6-3 lead for Gwinnett.
After starter Dylan Dodd gave way to the bullpen in the 5th inning, relievers Jackson Stephens, Daysbel Hernandez and Ken Giles capped off the game, sealing of the 6-3 win for the Stripers.
(46-51) Mississippi Braves 0, (58-39) Tennessee Smokies 13
Cal Conley, SS: 1-4
KeShawn Ogans, 3B; 1-4
David Fletcher, SP: 2.2 IP, 8 H, 10 ER, 3 BB, K
Box Score
To put it bluntly, it was an absolutely awful night for Mississippi on Wednesday, as the Braves lost by a whopping 13-0. So we’ll try to get through this as quickly as possible as there weren’t too many highlights to single out on the night.
Starter David Fletcher was rocked as in just 2.2 innings, the knuckleballer allowed 10 earned runs and struck out just 1 on the night. Tennessee eventually scored 3 additional runs in the top of the 9th to take a 13-0 lead.
Meanwhile, the Mississippi offense was stagnant as they were held scoreless on the night by a 13-0 margin. All told, the Braves tallied just 4 hits — half of which came in the bottom of the 4th inning — on the night compared to Tennessee’s 15 on the night. The Smokies would end up holding on for a 13-0 victory in what was a lackluster performance by Mississippi.
(46-49) Rome Emperors 2, (56-40) Bowling Green Hot Rods 7
Ethan Workinger, LF: 2-4, 3B, R
Jace Grady, RF: 1-3, 2 RBI
Adam Zebrowski, C: 1-4, 2B
Jhancarlos Lara, SP: 5.2 IP, 3 H, ER, 3 BB, 9 K
Box Score
Keeping with a familiar theme on the day throughout Atlanta’s minor league system, Rome lost to Bowling Green after a faulty night at the dish.
After both squad were held scoreless in the first 3 frames, Bowling Green jumped on the board — scoring 1 run off of Rome starter Jhancarlos Lara to take a 1-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Emperors failed to string together any coherent offense as they were held scoreless through the 6th inning.
While the Hot Rods scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th to extend their lead to 4-0, Rome finally scored in the home half of the 7th inning. Ethan Workinger ledoff with a triple before Jace Grady brought him home on a single to make it a 4-1 game. However, Adam Zebrowski grounded into a double play and E.J. Exposito grounded out to end the inning with Rome scoring just once.
Bowling Green scored thrice more in the top of the 8th to extend their lead to 7-1 on the night. While Rome would score once in the home half of the final frame — thanks to a Grady sacrifice fly to score Drew Compton to make it 7-2 — that would be the last of the offense the Emperors could muster as they ultimately fell.
(36-59) Augusta GreenJackets 2, (51-45) Down East Ducks 6
Wilmer De La Cruz, 3B: 2-2, 2B, RBI, BB
Noah Williams, RF: 1-4, 2B, R
Didier Fuentes, SP: 4.2 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 8 K
Box Score
Augusta was outhit 15-6 on Wednesday, but more importantly the GreenJackets were outscored by 4 runs in the 6-2 loss.
Didier Fuentes managed to toss 3 scoreless innings for Augusta before the wheels fell off the wagon. In the top of the 4th, Down East tagged Fuentes for 3 runs to take a 3-0 lead over Augusta.
The GreenJackets finally scored in the bottom of the 4th inning. Junior Garcia drew a leadoff walk and 2 batters later, Harry Owen doubled him to 3rd base. Then, a groundout off the bat of Luis Sanchez — plating Garcie — to make it a 3-1 deficit. After the Ducks added 2 runs to their lead in the top of the 5th, Augusta scored once more. With one out in the frame, Jose De Jesus singled before Echedry Vargas followed that up with a single of his own. Just 2 batters later, Julian Brock singled into right field to score De Jesus to make it a 5-2 lead for Down East.
While Down East would score once more in the top of the 9th to extend their lead to 6-2, the GreenJackets failed to plate another run as Augusta lost by that final on the day.
(13-25) DSL Braves 2, (26-16) DSL Rockies 13
Juan Mateo, SS: 2-4, RBI
Michael Baez, DH: 3-4, RBI
Lewis Sifontes, SP: 3 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, BB, K
Box Score
Despite tallying 10 hits on the day, the DSL squad came away with a loss by a large margin, losing to the DSL Rockies by a 13-2 final.
The Rockies jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Braves got on the scoreboard in the top of the 4th inning. Elio Campos singled to leadoff the inning before scoring on a Michael Baez single with 2 outs in the frame to make it a 6-1 game.
After the Rockies scored twice in the bottom of the 4th to make it 8-1, the Braves got one of those runs back in the top of the 5th. Joan Acevedo singled with 2 outs before stealing second base to put a runner in scoring position. Then, a Juan Mateo single plated Acevedo to make it an 8-2 deficit for the Braves.
Unfortunately, that was the only offense the Braves were able to push across the plate as the Rockies proceeded to score 5 runs to extend their lead to 13-2 which held as the final as the Braves lost.
