Hurston Waldrep struggled in his second rehab outing on Sunday while Drue Hackenberg turned in another strong start. Sunday didn’t go well from a win/loss point of view for the Atlanta Braves system, but we did see Drue Hackenberg follow up his 16 strikeout game with another strong, though more quiet start as well as rehab starts from Hurston Waldrep and Huascar Ynoa.
Durham Bulls 4, Gwinnett Stripers 3
Box Score
Statcast
Drake Baldwin, DH: 1-3, BB, .287/.431/.467

Brooks Wilson, RP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 4.62 ERA
Huascar Ynoa’s rehab assignment saw him make the start for Gwinnett on Sunday and go three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk and striking out two on 44 pitches - including nine swings and misses. He was followed by Brooks Wilson who added a pair of scoreless frames, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts - and seven swings and misses. Jackson Stephens was next up and allowed a pair of runs in each of the two innings he appeared, lasting an inning and a third. Stephens was only charged with one earned run as the defense really didn’t do him many favors. Tommy Doyle finished off the inning for Stephens and struck out both batters he faced, including five swings and misses for just two batters. A scoreless inning from Ken Giles finished things off for the pitching staff.
The Stripers had no troubles getting guys on base, racking up seven hits and seven walks, but had trouble scoring runs in this one. The went just 2-12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 on base. Luke Waddell was one for four with a double and picked up two of the Stripers RBI along with a run scored to account for all three runs. Brian Anderson went one for three with a pair of walks, and Alejo Lopez went two for five with two runs scored. Drake Baldwin spent the day at DH, and went one for three with a walk in the loss.

Drue Hackenberg, SP: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 3.12 ERA
The first game of a doubleheader saw Drue Hackenberg make his first start since his impressive 16 strikeout outing last weekend. Hackenberg followed it up with six strikeouts over five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk over 64 pitches. While the massive strikeout number wasn’t there it was another strong game pitched very efficiently by Hackenberg. Landon Harper pitched a clean sixth inning to pick up a hold before giving way to Austin Smith for the save attempt. Smith picked up two outs before allowing two runs to give Montgomery the win, as he allowed three hits and a walk.
The Braves offense really struggled to get going outside of Cody Milligan and Justin Dean. Milligan was two for three with a solo homer and a total of two runs batted in. Dean went one for two with a walk, stole two bags, and scored a run. The pair reached base four times out of the seven times the Braves got on base, and accounted for two of the three runs scored.

De Avila only managed one strikeout, but he did lower his ERA to 3.42. He gave way to the pen for Patrick Halligan and Elison Joseph to each come in and pitch a scoreless inning of relief. This is definitely an interesting boxscore as Mississippi only allowed a run on four hits and four walks over seven innings, but they only managed two strikeouts combined.
Justin Dean followed his solid first game by doing it all over again in the second game. Dean was one for three with a run and an RBI, and stole two more bases to give him four on the day. Cal Conley went one for three with a double, steal, and run scored, while Geraldo Quintero reached base in every plate appearance by going two for two with a hit by pitch.

Justin Janas, 1B: 2-3, R, .242/.343/.336

Samuel Strickland followed and allowed a run to score during his inning and two third, before Isaac Gallegos went two scoreless innings to pick up the hold. Ryan Bourassa came into the ninth with a 6-4 lead, but picked up just one out before allowing three runs to score and ending this one in Brooklyn’s favor. Hurston Waldrep, SP: 2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 18.00 ERA
The Hurston Waldrep rehab stint made its stop in Augusta after making one appearance in the FCL. Waldrep went two innings and struggled, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. He threw 27 of his 47 pitches for strikes as he just didn’t have his best command in this one. Reibyn Corona followed and although he did get into a little trouble, pitched a scoreless inning. David Rodriguez was the third Augusta pitcher on the day and he allowed four runs over three innings of relief, before LJ McDonough and Kadon Morton each went one inning without allowing any further damage.
With the FCL season over the GreenJackets offense was made up of a bunch of new players to the roster, and those were the bats who made the impact here. Noah Williams, who isn’t exactly new to Augusta - but did just come from the FCL, homered and picked up two RBI to lead the way. Top prospect Luis Guanipa was one for five with a run batted in, while both Junior Garcia and John Gil drew walks and Gil stole a base as well. Luis Sanchez was two for three with a double, walk, run scored, and one batted in.
