Reynaldo Lopez left the game early with forearm tightness, as the Braves’ bats showed out, crushing the Mets. In a huge game for the standings between two long-time rivals, we had a solid pitching matchup between Reynaldo Lopez for Atlanta and David Peterson for the Mets.
The pitching dominated through the top of the third, with only a few baserunners. The Braves bats especially struggled, with five strikeouts through their first three innings. The Mets posed the first big threat of the game in the bottom third, with a leadoff double, followed by a walk. Lopez managed to escape giving up any damage with two groundouts and a pop-up. As happens so often in baseball, a missed opportunity for one team compounds into a breakthrough for the other. Atlanta got a leadoff walk from Austin Riley and a bloop single from Marcell in the fourth, and Matt Olson hit an absolute crush-job of a three run homer to give the Braves a solid lead.

A d’Arnaud walk, a Nacho single, and an Arcia walk on a wild pitch brought another run home for Atlanta for a 4-0 lead. The daily bad news for Atlanta is that Reynaldo Lopez exited the game with forearm tightness after completing his third inning, as Dylan Lee took over in the bottom of the fourth. Lee allowed a one out double, but kept the Mets off the scoreboard for the time being.
After a fairly lifeless offensive fifth for the Braves, Lee held the Mets scoreless, despite a double with a huge help from Ramon Laureano and Travis d’Arnaud, as Taylor tried to score from second on a ground ball single, but was gunned down by a perfect throw and tag to keep shutout alive.

More of nothing from the Braves offense gave way to Pierce Johnson on the mound in the sixth, as Pierce kept the Mets off the board in an efficient 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. The Mets turned to one of their new trade acquisitions in the seventh, in Ryne Stanek and he gave up a leadoff homer to Orlando Arcia, giving the Braves a nice insurance run. Stanek did get Rosario out before drilling Adam Duvall in the ribs with a fastball and then giving up another home run to Austin Riley to make it an 7-0 game.

AJ Minter got the seventh and had no problem working around a walk for a scoreless inning. A nice opposite field line drive single for Travis d’Arnaud and another homer, this time from Ramon Laureano gave Atlanta a huge 9-0 lead. The recently healed Jimmy Herget got the eighth and blew the shutout with a walk to Nimmo and a homer on a middle-middle fastball to Pete Alonso, but struck out Vientos to finish the inning. The top of Atlanta’s order went down in order in the ninth and Herget got a second inning, given the score.
Herget breezed his way to a scoreless inning, finishing off the Mets and giving the Braves a 1.5 game cushion in the standings. That’s a huge series win away from home for now, but we’ll have to keep an eye on that injury to Lopez.
