The 19-year-old now has 83 strikeouts in 65.1 innings this season. From the big leagues to the Dominican Summer League, it was a rough time for all of Atlanta’s minor league squads in action on Wednesday as not a single team managed to come away with a victory.
Nevertheless, there were a few individual performances to highlight, so let’s get to it.
(46-52) Gwinnett Stripers 6, (46-52) Durham Bulls 7
Alejo Lopez, 3B: 3-5, 2B, 2 R
Skye Bolt, LF: 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, R, BB
J.P. Martinez, CF: 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB
Taylor Widener, SP: 3 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 3 BB
Box Score
Gwinnett came out on the wrong end of a walkoff on Wednesday night, losing by a 7-6 final to Durham.
After both squads were held scoreless to start the game, the Bulls tagged Gwinnett starter Taylor Widener for one run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the home half of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Stripers.
Gwinnett got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Alejo Lopez doubled and proceeded to steal third base. Then, Skye Bolt laced a double of his own into left field, plating Lopez to make it a 3-1 game.
The Stripers took their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four times. Yuli Gurriel ledoff with a single before a Luke Waddell walk moved him up to scoring position. Alejo proceeded to single to load the bases as Skye Bolt then drew a walk to cut the deficit to 3-2. After Sandy Leon brought Waddell home on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3, a J.P. Martinez double scored Lopez and Bolt to give the Stripers their first lead of the game at 5-3.
After Widener exited the game, Jackson Stephens came on and did his job, tossing 3 scoreless innings in relief. However, fellow relievers Hayden Harris and Brooks Wilson allowed a combined 3 runs as the Bulls retook the lead by 6-5.
Trailing by 1 run in the top of the ninth, the Stripers came through in what could have been their last at-bat, to tie the game. After Eli White was hit by a pitch and stole second base, Luke Waddell singled on a line drive into right field to score White and tie the game at 6-6.
That tie woldn’t last long, as Gwinnett reliever Domingo Gonzalez would allow one run in the bottom of the final frame, as Durham walked things off by a 7-6 final.
(44-47) Mississippi Braves 0, (50-42) Montgomery Biscuits 5
Cal Conley, SS: 1-4
Cade Bunnell, 2B: 1-2, BB
Ian Mejia, SP: 4 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Box Score
It was a rough go of it for Mississippi in Wednesday’s contest as the Braves tallied just three total hits on the night while the pitching staff allowed five runs in the shutout loss.
Starter Ian Mejia tossed a pair of scoreless innings before Montgomery scored 5 runs — 4 earned for Mejia — to take a 5-0 lead.
Offensively, it was the epitome of a slow night for the Braves. Mississippi got a single in each of the first and fourth innings but failed to put a runner in scoring position until the top of the eighth inning. However, with a runner on second and third, Cal Conley — who notched one of the Braves’ 3 hits on the night — grounded out to end the inning.
While the Mississippi pitching staff managed to prevent the Biscuits from scoring, the Braves offense was unable to do anything in the final inning as they lost by the 5-0 final.
(44-46) Rome Emperors 1, (43-49) Brooklyn Cyclones 2
Adam Zebrowski, C: 1-4, RBI
Kevin Kilpatrick Jr., CF: 1-3, BB
Jhancarlos Lara, SP: 6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K
Box Score
Despite getting a season-best performance from starter Jhancarlos Lara, Rome ultimately fell in extra innings to Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon.
Across 6 stellar innings, Lara scattered just two hits and allowed a pair of walks while striking out six to keep the Cyclones off the scoreboard. Over his past 3 starts, Lara has tossed 15.1 innings where he struck out 15 and allowed 5 runs total, lowering his season ERA to 4.65 on the year.
If offense is your thing, this game probably wasn’t for you as both squads combined for just 3 runs on 10 hits on the day. While Lara was dominating the opposition, his own offense failed to produce at all through the first nine innings as the Emperors were held scoreless.
However, thanks to the likes of relievers Shay Schanaman and Jared Johnson, Brooklyn was also held scoreless through regulation, sending the game to extra innings knotted up at 0-0.
Rome finally broke the scoreless affair in the top of the 10th inning. Drew Compton began the frame at second base and advanced to third on a Jace Grady groundout. After Bryson Worrell replaced Compton as a pinch-runner, Adam Zebrowksi singled into left field to plate Worrell — which would be the only run the Emperors would score.
However, Rome reliever Isaac Gallegos would falter in the home half of the inning as the Cyclones would score twice to walk off the Emperors and hand Rome the loss.
(36-54) Augusta GreenJackets 3, (40-52) Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4
Noah Williams, RF: 2-4, 2 2B, RBI, R
John Gil, SS: 1-3, 2B
Didier Fuentes, SP: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
Box Score
Despite getting a solid, productive outing from starter Didier Fuentes, the GreenJackets ultimately came up short by 1 run to Myrtle Beach.
Across 4.2 innings, Fuentes scattered 3 hits while allowing 3 runs and 2 walks. However, Fuentes struck out 8 batters over that frame as the 19-year-old’s ERA currently sits at 2.48 on the season with 83 strikeouts in just 65.1 innings.
The Pelicans jumped out to a 3-0 lead by scoring 1 run in the bottom of the fourth and 2 runs in the fifth while the GreenJackets were held scoreless through the first six innings. Augusta finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning.
Jacob Godman ledoff with a single before Luis Sanchez walked to advance him to second base. A Noah Williams double — the first of 2 in the game for Williams — would plate Sanchez to cut the Myrtle Beach lead to 3-1. A double off the bat of Leiker Figueroa in the next at-bat would make it a 3-2 game. However, the Pelicans got one of those runs back in the home half of the inning to extend their lead to 4-2 on the night.
In the top of the ninth, Sanchez worked a one-out walk before Williams doubled him to third base. Figueroa would proceed to groundout to second base, scoring Sanchez and making it a 4-3 game. However, that would be the only offense Augusta could string together in the final frame as the GreenJackets came up short by a 4-3 final.
