Sean Murphy in the lineup, Whit Merrifield seemingly not fully recovered. In the first game of a double header, the Allan Winans of the Atlanta Braves will be taking on Frankie Montas of the Cincinnati Reds.
Frankie Montas has struggled over the past couple of seasons. This season he has struggled to a 4.88 ERA and 5.01 FIP. Since the start of June, his ERA has been even higher at 5.14. Of course, the Braves offense is depleted with injuries, so it is not like Montas will be facing a star studded lineup today.
Jarred Kelenic has had success against Montas in seven at-bats where he has one HR, a .286 average, and 1.232 OPS. Eddie Rosario has struggled in his six at-bats against Montas having never made it on base. Whit Merrifield could be fun to watch against Montas since he has had plenty of looks at Montas with twenty at-bats. He has been successful with a .400 average and .905 OPS against him.
No other players on the Braves have faced Montas more than one at-bat.
Sean Murphy will be getting the start for this game. It appears Whit Merrifield is still not ready from his pre-game injury of his finger since he has had the best career success against Montas of any of the Atlanta Braves.
The Braves will roll with Zack Short at second and Nacho Alvarez at third.

With the depleted squad that the Braves are bringing it won’t be shocking if they struggle, but hopefully they can get a spark of momentum against a starting pitcher that has been struggling. If they don’t score early they may have a tough time against the Reds’ bullpen. They have the seventh best ERA in MLB.
With Winans only making seven career appearances at the MLB level it should come as no shock that none of the young hitters on the Reds have ever faced him. Will this be an advantage for Winans, or a disadvantage?

The Reds will bring a lineup that is very similar to the one the brought Monday, except the are some changes in the OF. Fraley will move to LF, Benson will move to CF, and Hinds will start in RF with Fairchild getting the day off.
