Alan Winans faces Frankie Montas and Chris Sale will face Nick Martinez The Atlanta Braves are scheduled for a double header today against the Cincinnati Reds. Scheduled is the key word here as whether has not been kind to the Braves as of late.
The Reds were able to score four runs on the Reynaldo López, who has the lowest ERA among qualified starters. The Braves offense struggled once again and scored one run while facing rising star Hunter Greene.
Today’s double header will be Allan Winans against Frankie Montas in game one, followed by Chris Sale facing Nick Martinez in what looks to be a solid pitching matchup.
In the first game, it could potentially being a high scoring game by Atlanta standards. The Braves do not give up many runs. In fact, no team has given up fewer runs, and have the third lowest ERA (3.46). However, they do not score many runs either, having scored the eighth fewest.
With Allan Winans against Frankie Montas, from a high level view looks like the Braves could be giving up runs and scoring them. Montas has a 4.85 ERA so far this season which is far worse than his career 4.01, especially if you consider that offense is down across the league this year. In terms of ERA+, he is twelve percent below league average.
Winans is largely untested. He has had success in the minors this season. In thirteen starts over fifteen games, he looked solid over his 82.0 innings. He has a 2.74 ERA, seventy-five strikeouts, and 1.10 WHIP. However, in his lone appearance at the MLB level this season he pitched 5.0 innings and gave up six runs on only one strikeout. In 2023 he had six starts and a 5.29 ERA over 32.1 innings. Hopefully he is not dealing with a case of the yips.
None of the Reds have ever faced Winans at the MLB level before, so it will be interesting to see if that will be to Winan’s advantage. As for Montas, only three Braves have at least six at-bats against him.
Kelenic has had success against Montas. In seven at-bats he has one HR, a .286 average, and 1.232 OPS. The player that will be interesting to see is if Whit Merrifield makes his debut for the Braves. He has had an extensive look at Montas with twenty at-bats. He has also been successful with a .400 average and .905 OPS against him. Eddie Rosario has seen him six times, but has yet to get on base.
In game two, the runs may come more at a premium for both clubs. As most of us know, Chris Sale has had a Cy Young caliber season thus far. Nick Martinez has been no slouch either. Martinez made his debut way back in 2014, played for four seasons and then left for Japan for four seasons. Since he has been back, he has been one of the better pitcher in MLB with ERAs of 3.47, 3.43, and 3.88 respectively.
Although his ERA of 3.88 is his highest since coming back from Japan, his 1.125 WHIP is the lowest of his career. He has been insanely good at limiting walks at only 1.1 per nine innings. This has led to a very good 6.22 SO/W ratio, despite only striking out fifty-six hitters. To put that in perspective, Sale has one-hundred-forty strikeouts.
Seven Braves have faced Martinez before, but only three have more than four at-bats. Matt Olson and Marcel Ozuna have dominated him in their careers. Olson has two HRs, .308 average, and 1.207 OPS in thirteen at-bats. Ozuna has seen him less with eight at-bats, but has been even better with two HRs of his own, to be paired with a .500 average and 1.875 OPS. Like with Montas Rosario has struggled against Martinez with a .125 average in sixteen at-bats against Martinez. He does have a HR though.
No player on the Reds has seen Chris Sale more than five at-bats, but eight of them have faced him. Of those eight, five of them have never reached base. Spencer Steer and Tyler Stephenson have had the most success with a .500 average and 1.500 against him each. However, they have each only had two at-bats against him.
This double header could be two very different games in terms of runs scored, and it should be really fun to watch.
The first games has a first pitch time of 12:20 ET, and game two is at 6:05 ET.
