The Braves moved quickly once again, and announced that they agreed to terms with all 20 picks The Atlanta Braves never waste time getting their draft picks inked to deals, and just a week after the conclusion of the 2024 MLB draft they have managed to sign all 20 of their draft picks. Throughout the process it wasn’t exactly clear whether they could grab them all, especially 20th round pick Eric Hartman, but when it was announced that he would sign on Monday we had a pretty good idea then that they would pull it off. This signing brought the Braves within just $150 of the 5% overage that would lead to them forfeiting a future draft pick.
The #Braves today announced the club has signed each of its 20 picks from the 2024 First-Year Player Draft. In total, Atlanta has under contract 11 pitchers (seven right-handers and four left-handers), six outfielders, two infielders and one catcher. The major signee from this class is 17-year-old left-handed pitcher Cam Caminiti, who many thought would be a top 15 pick in the draft. Instead, Caminiti, who seems excited to be joining an organization known for developing pitchers and developing them quickly, slid down to the 24th pick in what many think is the steal of the first round. Caminiti was expected to be an expensive signing, and he was, but it became much clearer that the Braves would be able to do real damage with this signing class when they managed to sign him to a slot value deal.
Two other draftees are featured on the Battery Power midseason top 30 prospects, those being 2nd round pick Carter Holton and 3rd round pick Luke Sinnard. Both players stand out for their performances in college and their favorable pitch data that popped up on the Braves models, though both come with injury questions that pushed them down in the draft.
5th round pick Nick Montgomery was the most significant over-slot deal from the draft, and he just missed our top 30 prospects but is one we are looking forward to following moving forward. Montgomery is a catcher with big raw power, and is now going to an organization who has developed three top-100 caliber catchers in recent years with Shea Langeliers, William Contreras, and now Drake Baldwin. Montgomery’s $1,000,000 signing bonus was the third-largest in the class behind Caminiti and Holton. There were other interesting over-slot signings as well. 6th-round pick Ethan Bagwell is an athletic pitcher who is in need of quite a bit of development, but could have a mid-rotation ceiling. 12th round pick Cayman Goode came in just over slot, but is himself an athletic righty from a Virginia prep school who knows how to spin a breaking ball but will need development in his other attributes. Then there is 20th round pick Eric Hartman, an athletic outfielder from Canada who Matt Powers notes in his draft recap as having a good makeup.
