Atlanta Braves news and notes from Saturday If I had told Braves fans that Bryce Elder would strike out 9 with only 1 walk over 5.0 innings in his Saturday spot start, I would wager that nearly every one would have taken that without knowing anything else. Elder, of course, struggles to accumulate strikeouts and generally finds his success when he is avoiding walks. However, he gave up 6 earned runs and 2 home runs in that 5.0 inning outing. I’m still going to call it promising, as the batted ball luck is the least consistent part of the equation, but it was quite a strange start for Elder. The biggest thing for Bryce is keeping the walks down. I am quite skeptical that he will suddenly become a real strikeout pitcher, but if he can consistently keep walking batters at a rate similarly to Saturday, he can finally take that step to being a consistently playable major league pitcher.
Braves News
Charlie Morton led the Braves to a 3-2 win in extra innings, as the offense did just enough to squeak out the win in the first game of the doubleheader.
Bryce Elder did not fair as well in his spot start, as the Braves fell 9-5 to the Cardinals in the second game, despite the offense showing some power.
MLB News
The young lefty Luke Little’s season is likely over for the Cubs, due to a shoulder injury suffered before the All-Star Break.
Rumored potential trade target Bo Bichette was diagnosed with a minor calf strain and will miss several weeks due to the injury, likely taking him out of trade consideration.
JT Realmuto returned to the Phillies from a nearly month-long 10-day IL stint due to a minor knee surgery earlier in the summer.
Mike Trout is beginning his rehab assignment and is expected to return to the Angels’ lineup in the near future.
Yandy Diaz is going on the restricted list for the Rays, as he deals with a personal family matter that is expected to take a few days.
