Atlanta Braves news and notes from Wednesday The big news of the day remained focused on the draft, with news of signings and some more complete thoughts from our prospect team. Staying on the prospect side, possibly the Braves’ most exciting position-player prospect was promoted to full-season ball.
I’ll share here my own mildly informed thoughts on the draft class. It’s seems clear to me that the franchise roster-building strategy is fundamentally based on the volatility and injury risk of pitchers, as well as the relative stability of position-players. By building a strong pitching development system and a highly desirable work environment, the franchise opts for volume of pitching and largely avoids making long term commitments to pitchers. By extending their position-players, they not only are able to get lower AAV contracts for those hitters, but also afford themselves longer turnover cycles for position-players, enabling more draft capital to be spent on pitching without resulting in a deficit of position-player development. By additionally leveraging prospect capital, particularly pitcher, to acquire supplemental high quality hitters, this is a sound strategy for building a fairly consistent contender. This draft was a continuation of this approach and did a nice job combining quality and quantity prospects as far as I can tell.
