Homers were, in fact, hit The homers, they were indeed hit Monday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The 2024 Home Run Derby was this evening and Teoscar Hernandez reigned as king of the long ball.
The 8 guys competing this year wasn’t exactly a star-studded list but there were some interesting names and fun story lines follow:
The 8 contestants:
Gunnar Henderson
Marcell Ozuna
Alec Bohm
Bobby Witt Jr
Teoscar Hernandez
Pete Alonso
Adolis Garcia
Jose Ramirez
The rules and format of this event has seen more alterations than the mound in a Jose Alvarado appearance so fully explaining it all would take both hands, a world map, and the periodic table of elements. Short version, the 8 guys all hit in the first round with the top four advancing. Then the final four get paired off into 1-on-1 style for the second and third round until a champion is crowned.
Let’s get to the results.
FIRST ROUND
Bohm: 21
Witt Jr: 20
García: 18
Hernandez: 19
Ramírez: 20
Alonso: 12
Ozuna: 16
Henderson: 11
For Braves’ fans, Ozuna was obviously the name to watch and he got off to a tremendous start with the longest homer of the night:

But things fizzled for him after that start.
We have another shocker. Marcell Ozuna is out.Launched a 473-footer in the first minute. Later smoked 6 in 8 swings to reach 14 before his bonus round. But he finished with only 16.So Alec Bohm, Jose Ramirez and Bobby Witt Jr. are in.Gunnar Henderson needs at least 19 to…— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) July 16, 2024
With the first round over, the top four to advance were Alec Bohm, Bobby Witt Jr, Teoscar Hernandez, and Jose Ramirez. For the second round, the format changed from total homers to head to head, with the seeding based on total homers hit in the first round. So the semi finals were Bohm vs Hernandez and Witt Jr vs Ramirez.
Witt Jr led things off with a 17 spot in the second round, and that wound up being enough to win his bracket as Guardians 3B Jose Ramirez stalled out at 12.
Hernandez and Bohm went at it the second semi-final and Hernandez posted a solid 14 homer performance to start things off, and it took Bohm to the very last swing of his second round to tie that number dead on at 14. And then Bohm went 0-3 in his bonus round and we had our first tie-breaker round of the evening.
The tie-breaker for this event was a ““swing off” where each guy got 3 swings and 3 swings only. Hernandez had the honors and absolutely unloaded on two of his three swings for two upper-deck homers. Bohm couldn’t answer, only homering on one of his three swings and Hernandez advanced to the finals the face off with Witt Jr.
Hernandez led off the final round and somehow found the strength to launch 14 homers to set a high bar to clear. Witt Jr got off to a slow start but got hot late and hit 11 homers with just his bonus round left. He then hit 2 more homers to get to 13 with just 1 out left and on his last swing of the night, hit a ball to dead centerfield that came up inches short. The Home Run Derby title on this night belonged to Teoscar Hernandez.
