It was a mixed day overall for the organization, but the pitchers almost universally delivered admirable individual performances. The Atlanta Braves system just added a huge talent in the prep left-handed arm Cam Caminiti, as well as another intriguing lefty out of Vandy, Carter Holton in the second round. Please do go check out our draft content from day 1 and stay tuned in for days 2 and 3! While our prospect team is killing it on the draft content, yours truly will be bringing you today’s minor league recap in highly abbreviated fashion, due to my limited prospect knowledge relative to the normal crew. Normal programming will resume shortly.
(44-49) Gwinnett Stripers 1, (43-49) Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 2
Box Score
Forrest Wall, CF: 2-5
Luke Waddell, SS: 2-4, 1 2B
AJ Smith-Shawver, SP: 3.2 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 5.97 ERA
Alan Winans, SP/RP: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2.74 ERA
With Nacho Alvarez out after being hit on the wrist Friday and Drake Baldwin in Texas for the Futures Game, the Gwinnett Stripers roster looks a bit more boring than it has in prior weeks. AJ Smith-Shawver got the start and was quite unlucky but overall fine over 3.2 innings. It was a pretty run-of-the-mill outing for AJ, with unspectacular strikeout numbers and the single walk plus a hit batsman, somehow translating to 2 earned runs, which Alan Winans allowed to score. Winans was largely strong though, keeping the Shrimp off the bases for the most part, with sub-par strikeout numbers but no walks. The offense, however, was poor, only producing one run through Waddell and Wall.
(40-46) Mississippi Braves 5, (47-40) Birmingham Barons 4
Box Score
Cal Conley, SS: 2-4, 2B, SB
Yolbert Sanchez, 2B: 3-4, 3B, 2 SB
Drew Parrish, SP: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 3.92 ERA
Mississippi is largely lacking in prospects of significance right now, especially with someone named Drew Parrish on the mound to start Sunday’s game. The offense was productive enough without hitting a single homer to squeak this win out over the Barons, with Cal Conley, Justin Dean, and Yolbert Sanchez leading the way. Parrish, to his credit had a strong start with 2 earned runs over 5.0 innings with 7 strikeouts.
(43-42) Rome Emperors 0, (38-49) Greenville Drive 2
Box Score
Sabin Ceballos, 3B: 0-4, K
EJ Exposito, SS: 0-4, 2K
Cory Wall, SP: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 3.23 ERA
Jared Johnson, RP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2.83 ERA
This was a very bad game for the Emperors. The most anyone did on offense was a walk and a single from Nick Ward. Four other players each managed one single and that is the extent of offensive production for Rome, which (combined with bad sequencing) is how you get shut out. Cory Wall had an admirable start, allowing 2 runs over 6 innings with only 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Meanwhile reliever Jared Johnson was a bright spot, striking out two in his scoreless inning of work.
(36-49) Augusta GreenJackets 5, (39-48) Fayetteville Woodpeckers 3
Box Score
Isaiah Drake, CF: 0-3, BB
Robert Gonzalez RF: 1-3, BB, K
Kade Kern, DH: 3-4, 2 2B
Anthony Garcia, SP: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR, 5.35 ERA
Giomar Diaz, RP: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 0.00 ERA
This was a little better from the Braves’ affiliate, as the offense again did enough, behind an impressive performance from Kade Kern and a number of contributions from around the lineup, including the intriguing Robert Gonzalez. The pitching staff was largely solid from top to bottom in the game, with the highlight coming from Giomar Diaz’ 3 inning relief appearance with an impressive 5 strikeouts.
My apologies to anyone disappointed in the relative lack of depth compared to our usual minor league recaps, but consider me to be simply a modestly qualified substitute today and the true professionals will be back in no time.
