The big arm Brecht’s provides the Braves with some significant tools to develop Another hour, another mock draft this time courtesy of Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo. The Baseball America team is working overtime, churning out mock draft after mock draft and this time they have the Braves taking big arm pitcher Brody Brecht out of the University of Iowa. Brecht was a two sport star, a trait the Braves also like, in high school and was set to play wide receiver to for the University of Iowa.
Many of the players I’ve heard tied to the Braves (Carson Benge, Ryan Waldschmidt, Jurrangelo Cijntje) simply aren’t available and unless they want to take one of the two available college catchers (Lomavita or Janek), there aren’t many appealing college hitter profiles to choose from after a huge run on that demographic from 13-22.
That could lead to a college arm like Brecht, or perhaps another college (or high school) arm from further down the board on an underslot deal. They’ve used that strategy in the past, and names like Braylon Doughty, Luke Holman, Bryce Cunningham, Ben Hess and Levi Sterling could all be interesting fits.
When that didn’t quite work out as planned, Brody switched to baseball full time where his talented arm has made him a possible pick for the Braves in the first round. There are issues with control as Brody had a 5.63 BB/9 rate his junior year of college, but he also did strike out nearly 15/9. The arm talent is indisputable, however, with two 70 grade types pitches in his fastball and slider. There is a lot of risk with Brody, as he does have command issues, as well as a lot of reliever risk, but you can’t teach his fastball velocity which, when paired with his slider and developing splitter makes him a very intriguing project and draft pick.
